Show me your Pillar's

You should check out www.reefvideos.com

Check out the video called "Carl's 150g Reef". he made some awesome pillars using thorite cement. he also predrilled the rock for pegging corals. nice effects made that way.

The latest video on the site is Carl's new 300g tank. about 10 minutes into the video he goes into the cementing process he used.

Overflows and sump are not working yet. I will be adding that this week. This was transferred over from another temp tank.

Where are you all getting your small sheets (either square or circular) for pillar bases? I've checked USPlastic.com and TapPlastics.com without success.

Nano gerl, how many tanks do you have? had? I remember when you first started posting, didnt u start with a 75?

Check my line below for everything that I've had... but the first tank I started posting on RC was my 54g snowflake eel tank.. then we combined that into the 75g which led to the 120 after we moved.

Pillars

Pillars

I finally made pillars in my 90g tank. I broke my larger pieces into smaller pieces with a chisel. I used 1/2 acrylic rod and 8" acrylic bases (1/2" thick). A 5/8" mason bit worked great for the drilling. They really opened up more swimming space. I actually had alot of LR left over.

Here is my tank thread if you want to see the tank before the pillars.

For those of you using pvc to support your pillars, do you fill the pvc with sand or something, then cap it on both ends to keep the water out, or do you just leave it open and hope the pvc doesn't end up filled with stagnant water? Or is there no concern that the water will get stagnant in the pipes.

I drill holes in the PVC and use it as a spraybar being fed by my closed loop. :D

No closed loop for me, so that's not an option. I guess I can wait until monday to pick up some acrylic rods. I tried window blind rods today and they had way too much flex for my liking.

For those of you with pillars do any of you drill holes in your live rock so frag plugs can be easily attached? If so what size bit do you use?

actually if you watch carls video on reefvideos.com he uses 1/4" tube that is drilled into the bottom of the frag and 1/4 holes all over his rocks so that he can just easily place corals where ever he likes. .. very educational.. worth watching!
