Show me your Pillar's

one.jpg

think the one on the right counts as a pillar?

I wish I found this thread a couple of weeks ago before I drilled my rock, this thread is the s&*^ !!! you guys have your pillars down to a science, every tank on this post is unbelievable. It was my first time doing this so I used the 3/8 acrylic rods and did half my tank. Haven't gotten to trhe rest of it though. Now I am inspired again.. I will be trying to imitate some of the formations I just saw. Nice job....

wow, looking back at my rocks before i added any corals looks pretty baron. that's depressing! :D

here's a more updated pic, although things now are slightly different. i had some trouble with my BTA and had to move a few things.

WOW, I can't believe that this thread keeps coming back. I'm glad so many people have tried and posted ways of making pillars or custom aquascapes! We have come a long way from the old rock walls.

Here is an early shot of the columns I am placing in my 75g. Since this pic, the one on the righ has been scrapped for a duplicate / mirror of the one on the left. I will try to get a better shot. I plan to use the pegging method like Carl on reefvideos. The plates are the ceramic plates from Aquaroche, hard to beat at $15 each. By doing this, it will give me a lot of room for corals and yet maximum room for fish to swim as well. When I take a better shot, I will try to get a top down shot to show all the surface area for corals to sit.

I'll be at RAP tomorrow for a few hours, you going?

DamnPepShrimp, those will look really nice when you start placing corals on them.

Yeah, no kidding, I see this thread pop up in my list more often than not!

Pillars are still by far one of the best things I did in my tank :D

Does anybody know how to make this stuff:

That was made out of a stucco mix, but it has the same problems as any other concrete; you have to cure it in fresh water. It leaches into the water and turns it very alkaline. Look up the "DIY rock" thread. Lots of ideas there. I actually gave up on this project and just took some marine 2 part epoxy and glued a bunch of LR together.

here's an updated shot of mine. I took out the left side pillar and moved the right side into the center between the overflows. it's really alot more open than the photo makes it look.

figured I would show my pillars since I have been lurking in this forum for quite awhile. These are from about 2 months ago when I first upgraded to a 180 from a 90. I will post some newer ones in this weekend when I take some.

I have nothing but the rocks themselves holding them together. I had the opportunity to sort through an entire pallet of dry Puccani rock to get the one that fit just how I envisioned it. In the end it turned out pretty good, or at least I like to think so. I really got lucky with the center pillar as that is one rock that is about 18" across, The cool thing is dry it only weighed 22 lbs, cured it is almost 40.
