show me your skimmers!!!!!!

yes NW do have there place, but my main point was that air driven skimmers have been greatly overlooked. i use about 55w and pump in 65lpm of air. now beat that with any other type of air injection method and i'll fly like superman. the big thing that i found out is that air driven skimmer dont need to be small dia. and tall, just need to have a properly sized body, proper water feed pump input, and sometimes a diffuser plate and they will skim beautifuly. i had a 6ft skimmer right before the skimmer i have now, the only real difference, as far as skimmer size, is that i have less turbulence which leads to less bubble merging & better efficiency.

my g-3 is stock also with sedra 5000.

What water height is it sitting in . When was the last time you cleaned the needlewheel and venturi?

Also if you feel you want a slight increase in air volume then you can take a couple drill bits to the venturi air input and widen it a max of 3/16ths.

I just started at 1/8th and hand threaded it through then did the same with the 3/16ths.

This was what was advise by euro reef to some of their customers. I have done it on all my asm's and er's.
Hi it has been in about5inches of water, I necer cleaned the venturi though maybe thats it

A few things for ya . I have run my g-3 on my old 75, my 90 , my 120 (by itself) and my 40g prop tank. I was able to get good skimate from each tank with the 40g being the lightest color. Mainly because it has very little for a bioload.

All heights were from 8 inches to 12 with it sitting in 10 now. I have noticed that it it has worked the best when its at 10-12 inches .

Here is a pic when the g-3 was at 12" and was the only skimmer on the 120 . This was almost a year ago.

Also I would recomend that you clean the needlewheel and venturi ever 2 weeks . Those itty bitty snails get stuck in the needlewheel hindering performance and salt screep clogs the venturi hole again decreasing performance.

I would also find a way to increase the water depth it sits in .

NP :D Hope it works better for you . Also you can always widen the air intake on the venutri to 3/16 to allow more air in .

You're not kidding about the Baby. That's more expensive than college!

Not really, it does a tremendous job on my tank though.

I just got this baby today. I plumbed it into my drain just like my ER. It's breaking in right now so I expect to see some skimmate within the next few days.

jimdog, is tha as full of a rxn chamber as the skimmer gets. looks like you are wasting half of it away, maybe put a 90Ã"šÃ‚º on the output of the recirc pump or something to try and get the bubbles deeper, since more bubbles equals better skimming

Thanks Tim. I had the same concerns about this before I bought the unit. I could put a 45 on it to spray the bubbles down further into the camber, but by doing this I would not be creating anymoe bubbles as you suggested above. Just making a bit more contact time.

I was assured in another thread though by Brian at FinsReef that this would not increase the efficiancy of the unit. Besides, I've seen pics of these thing in action and they produce some nasty looking stuff. And this thing is rated for up to 225 gallons, and I'm running it on a 50. I should be fine:D :D :D

now not to argue but i have to here, but if you can fill the chamber with bubbles then you would be adding more to the chamber vs. a half full chamber. placing an elbow on the pump wouldnt cause the pump to make more bubbles just make the chamber more full of bubbles. also one reason that they dont put fittings on the output is that some pumps wont restart if there is anything connected to the output that has an opening lower that the outlet on the pump. ie. a 90 with a short length of pipe attatched to it

Tim

one more thing, if it works fine for you then that is all that matters, i am just the type of person that feels that everything can work better with a slight adjustment.

Thanks again Tim. I will ask Brian if he can get me a 45 and a 90 in metric to play around with. I'll post the pics in the H&S forum.

jimdogg - you went to H&S..thought you were getting a Deltec??

Lunchbucket

Yeah, I was looking into it. I was going to get a ap702 for my FOWLR, but it wouldn't fit. (Still deciding whether I'm gonna upgrade or not)

Then I was looking at the apf600 for my reef, but the return was too low to go over the edge of my sump. But I was leaning towards the H&S anyways. Why you ask? Well, it fits, which was a huge +, then it was $200 cheaper for a larger skimmer. An third, its built better than the Deltec. Not to take anything away from the Deltecs, but the ones I have seen here in Sac just seem a little flimsy. The new H&S forum will also be cool.

Now back to upgrading my other skimmer... I just found out 4 days ago that I might be moving to Japan this summer for a year. My girlfriends work visa runs out this summer so I'm thinking about going Asian for a year:D no point in upgrading if thats the case:rolleyes: So there might be a huge sell off in the near future of all my equipment. I'll just have to wait and see.

Jim

DANG don't leave us...but if you do sell me your equipment :P  j/k keep us posted on the whole moving thing :(
