Wow! That's a ton of air, going into that thing. That equates to about 2,973 liter per hour of air. Crazy!

Where did you get the air stones? Show some more pictures of what you modified please.
 
I think the advantages and power are undeniable! Lower power consumption, mad amounts of air, and taking the heat out of the water.

Oh yeah, and the fine pore airstones will essentially last forever....

All the advantages of the wood airstones (super fine bubbles) w/ no disadvantages (high PSI requirements to run, replacement every month)

So he's got all the air of a dual-beckett but not the water flow that you'd get from the monster pump that's required. Great idea but doesn't the massive flow allow you to have extra long contact time (2 min. +)?

Mike,

You've got it backwards... the massive flow that is required to produce the bubbles from a beckett actually decreases dwell/contact time.

W/ this method of producing air bubbles or w/ any type of recirculating setup (beckett or needlewheels can be recirculated), you can control flowthru and thus boost up contact time to a level which you desire (so called the "sweetspot") :)

This system as far as I'm concerned has a whole lot of advantages and very few disadvantages (ie. tweaking to hit the sweetsport, large expensive air pumps to really drive the airstones)

If you don't mind spending a little time tweaking the output and matching air output to the stones, I think the results are unbeatable.

Your right on John, It is so easy to adjust air verses water now and so much more efficient then Beckett or needle wheels, and I've run both types before. This skimmer before conversion was a Beckett in and two OR 3700's re-circulating. Then at best I was getting 45 Scfh. Now less heat & electricity and way more air.

The 4 ââ"šÂ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å“ 1ââ"šÂ¬Ã‚ bulkheads in the back where originally for the 2 OR's. I tapped the back of the bulkheads and screwed the 1/2" threaded air stones in. That way I could easily mount them with the points down to maximize bubble size. The thread rufio173 posted shows some of what I learned to get this skimmer to balance and have very small bubbles. Now it is hard to see where the water line stops from the bubbles rising. Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢m very pleased with this setup.

I tweaked it more last night and this morning it was pushing 105 scfh or 2982 l/h (if my math is right). That is equal to 3.3 Deltec Eheim 1260's.

JB NY, I got the air stones and pump at Aquatic Eco Systems.
 
The deltec eheim's are quoted at 900ml/hr, but I think that is at max air flow and I've heard actual working ranges from 600ml/hr to 700ml/hr, so in essence I think that the airpump that you are using redeye pretty much equals roughly 4 eheim 1260s. :)

I thought you had a great configuration before w/ the earlier setup, but I'm glad you continued pushing forward and got the results that you really wanted. :D A little R&D never hurt anyone. Haha

i am running an air driven skimmer also, had two of the sweetwater diffusers and hated the large bubble size, so i went and made a KW awesome air diffuser, mine is 2" cube with 1/4" thick basswood walls, this things blows away any diffuser i have seen as far as bubble size and super lower pressuer req. to produce bubbles, you should look into building a basswood one for your skimmer, you will be amazed at just how large your bubbles are now

Looks the Reef Devil skimmer to me. It is a good skimmer, I used on a 125 w/ a plenum. That was an awesome tank.
 
R33f - that might be the old reef devil version...doesn't look like the 500...so i'm guessing al OLD reef devil

anyone have any suggestions for a pump and 2 air stones that i could put iun my ER 6-2+ knock off?? 6" diameter by 24" total height. i'm not sure WHICH stone or pump to get. the pump would be used INDOORS...hopefully by the tank

Hey Zapata,

I don't know if you ever hit that sweet spot w/ those sweetwater diffusers. I know that the results have varied so far depending on who you talk to, but I think that if driven properly, these things can make really small bubbles that can really make some solid foam.

Just my thoughts. :) Glad you are having good luck w/ those KW diffusers. I just don't want to spend time every month making a new one. That's the ultimate advantage of these sweetwater diffusers, no fuss about replacing them after a month or two.

yeah true about replacing them , i just take it out and scrub it a little , seems to do the trick thus far
