Jimdogg, why is less than half the reaction chamber on the H & S bubbles? Shouldn't there be alot more bubbles in there?

Just the way they designed it to eliminate microbubbles. The bands that strengthen the pump welds also play a part. Things you will see in just about every forum, but hardly ever in the H&S forum is 1) microbubble issues 2) broken skimmers via shipment. Usually the only complaint I see is the smelly skimmate. But I see several of 1 & 2 in other forums/threads.

They will cut it shorter if you prefer, I'm sure they'd be happy to save the money on acrylic an shipping. I had my 1x1260 cut down to 25". They were happy to do it. ;-) Actually I wanted it cut even shorter but they wouldn't do it because they had to eliminate the bottom band and they basically said they wouldn't ship out a skimmer that way.

Here are a few shots of old ones I used to own, clkwrk is currently demo'ing my skimmer.

Ereefic,

Fliger is ABOSULTELY right. The Deltecs that use this pump have micro-bubble issues from what I have come to learn from locals.

This skimmer provides a very large chamber at the bottom so that there are none. Also the bands make it very strong.

This skimmer has a much larger chamber compared to the Deltecs which use this pump. The Deltecs use a shorter body with a smaller diameter chamber, while the a150 is the exact opposite :)

I can assure you this skimmer produces great results, and the top portion of the body is filled with very dense, small bubbles.

Zoom, I would assume that there are just as many bubbles in the top half of this skimmer as there are in the Deltecs because they use the same pump.

Fliger,

Nice collection.

Cheers,

Jim

I Quote this from my old explanation and i still belive it.

You can only Put so many bubbles in a designed chamber , if supersaturation point is reached, then the surface tension that maintained the individual bubbles' size is broken, the bubbles group together, and become larger. if supersaturation occurs throughout the skimmer column all the bubbles gets somewhat larger and the efficiency of the skimmer ceases some.
It is not how much air /bubbles is in the skimmer, But the bubbles if supersaturate in a small top area of the skimmer the efficiency drop somewhat that is all i'm saying . But again this is just me

LOL thats funny Zoom. I don't know if you're joking or not. Not sure what adding acrylic to the BOTTOM of the skimmer has to do with your saturation/supersaturation theories, but I (as well as any other use who has used more than one H&S and Deltec) can tell you, the bubble size is uniform across the entire skimmer.

For reference

Its easy to make a skimmer "look" fuller. Just put an angled return on. I did that with my current skimmer for a while and took it out. "Supersaturation :eek2: " worked better, as many AP702 users have found out by taking their taps completely off to increase air (and yes, condense the majority bubbles into the top 50% of the skimmer, yikes).

BK is the only skimmer that I've seen so far with smaller bubble size. I think Tunze's new pumps are supposed to have super fine bubbles as well.

I'm sorry Zoom, I do not have another explanantion.

I do know that the a150 is a very popular skimmer among hobbyists from California to Japan. I have also never heard any complaints about its performance (other than from Deltec users :)
)

Internationally and on other domestic boards, H&S seems to be the skimmer of choice. They have been doing this for many years, and if the skimmer/pump/size combo was not a winner, I'm sure they would have done away with it by now.

And finally, one of the most impressive skimmers for the money I've EVER owned - Tunze 9010. It runs $325 and draws 650LPH. I am literally emptying the cup every two days of nasty gunk - and my tank is very clean. These were from day 2, I have since then tweaked it and get a drier skimmate.

Very small, fits in sump easy

Wow Fliger, nice. I'm actually considering selling my Deltec AP600 and getting Tunze 9010. I like the Deltec, but I'm tired of worrying about an external skimmer in my apartment (overflowed three times). So you really seem to like this Tunze. How big of a space is it in? I have an area in the first baffle of my sump around 6" wide x 12" long I could put it.

wow, you overflowed a AP600? How's that happen?

It's not the Deltec's fault, it's the Prodibio system I use. The "Reef Booster" portion will cause the skimmer to overflow every time I use it, no matter where I have it adjusted, unless I leave the skimmer off for 2 days. Being in an apartment, this is causing me some stress.

Plus, to be honest, I could seriously use the money on the price difference between the two skimmers, so that's kinda driving my decision.

Lol. Nice one. I take it that the deltec is too large to run in your sump then, eh?

Yea, it won't fit in there, I didn't design the sump with that in mind. The 9010 will fit perfectly though. I'm still trying to decide if I really want to it or not, but I'm tempted.

I don't know why you all get really defensive now that I have offered my opinion on a product , but keep in mind it is an opinion. An opinion based on reading and having many skimmer before not is many as Fliger but maybe about seven different skimmer.
I'd really don't like to get to a manufacturing debate. If I must, I will concede that H/S products are the best in the world if it will deter a debate. It all comes down to what you like, want to support, and are happy with .if i ever get another skimmer it will still be one of my favorites my old Aerofamer830 i just did not like the big Iwaki 70 pump that i was using with it.
Here is full of bubbles:lol:

Fliger

I got to see the Tunze 9010 today over the LFS ( a Tunze dealer)
I was not impressed with the way it was built i took the cup of and it look and feel like my old G3 skimmer very cheap plastic to it .
But from looking at the pictures that you provide it most to work better than is build.

Hey Zoom - not defensive at all, just answering your questions and addressing your theory.

On the 9010, I had seen one at our LFS and when I first saw it I was less than impressed also. But then I saw the price. Materials really don't make a skimmer skim any better (usually). I'm sure they could use acrlic or more expensive materials but then you'd have another $600 skimmer. What they have is a 650LPH skimmer for $325. The comparable H&S is $599 (150) and the Deltec is over $800 (APF600) - both use the 650LPH Aquabee. They really put their money where it counted on this unit.

Im really diggin the nog pics... but this one really has set a new benchmark standard for 'gross'...
