Those are baby Fungia plate corals. When an adult coral dies, sometimes it will grow those stalks (called anthocauli) that will produce new corals. When the baby plate eventually breaks off to live on its own, another baby plate may grow on the stalk. It's a Fungia factory!

So don't throw away dead plate corals - but don't kill them on purpose either, because it's a somewhat rare occurrence.

What happened to the "ultra ultra ultra" aspect of this thread

Do you speak on behalf of the "Federal Bureau of ultra ultra ultra LPS"? Everyone has their own unique perspective on what's a nice piece. As well, what you think is ultra at your location, may be the most common and somewhat bland piece everyone has somewhere else. I think there are plenty of good posts in the thread recently.

Here is a pic of my elegance coral I bought form a private collector who has had it for the last 6-7 months. Its super healthy and good great from the start. Its definately going to be the centerpiece of my 29 gallon nano reef.

What happened to the "ultra ultra ultra" aspect of this thread

+1 to this. Most of these would be considered B to A grade at best. Ultra implies at least 5 distinct color profiles! Some of them aren't even LPS...ricordias? :hmm4:

I would like to see some ULTRA GRADE lps on here...not: this is my favorite piece, or this is the most colorful piece in my collection.
