Well, got the bad news yesterday. All three fish (regal and 2 baby grammas) were showing signs of Ich. The regal had grown a couple spots after I got him into my tank, but then they dropped off. I was hoping they wouldn't come back, but they did. Classic cryptocaryon. The spots fell off during the night, then reappeared on ALL of the fish about a week later.
Removed all 3 fish to my new 20 gallon Q-tank. Pulled a few bio-balls out of my trickle filter and put them into a Fission Subcurrent internal trickle filter I bought for the Q-tank. The filter is rated for tanks up to 30 gallons so I should be OK. The filter is a surface-skimming design. No signs of any ammonia yet.
Started bringing the salininty in the Q-tank down to the 1.009 therapeutic level for hyposalinity treatment today. Removed 4 gallons of tank water and replaced with 4 gallons of declorinated, buffered fresh water. SG is now 1.185, PH is 8.2 and temp is 78.7.
After an initial period of shock, all of the fish are eating and alert. The Regal ate 2 nice-sized pieces each of angel formula and mysis and is continually grazing on a piece of alge-covered rock I put into the Q-tank from the display.
I hope she makes it. She's really pretty and could grow into a nice centerpeice fish.
Bruno,
The fact that she is still eating is a good sign. However, biofilters of any type dont work verywell at lower salinity....keep that in mind. I like to use a kalk dripper filled w/ RO water and sodium bicarb to maintain pH and salinity. Good information here for QT, fish diseases &treatment, and nutrition for fish. You may need to register to read the threads, but its very good information, and I attribute alot of my success with my Regal to it.
