Do these Zoas have a Name?

Do these Zoas have a Name?

These kinda look like some that I picked up yesterday called "Mint Infernos"

Do these Zoas have a Name?

magicianss.jpg

they are magicians. although, mint inferno isnt a bad description for them now that you say it

there are another similar polyp that is commonly called serpent eyes. Same color scheme differnt type of spackling, but the serpent eyes are regular to smallish sized zoanthids. the magicians are large

These are similar, but with white striping in the skirts and more controlled speckling around the outer circle of the oral disc. I think they are the same as your first pic.

These are still early in coloring up.

I would agree with that, although yours arent bleached and look much better. :)

Ive only had those ones a few months. they are now coming around though.

So here are those Mint Infernos

So here are those Mint Infernos

Here is a shot of those Mint Infernos that I picked up a couple of days ago. They do look similar but don't have the PE green mouth.

Do they have those white lines on the stems???
I don't think a green mouth really confirms its a PE. I have some zoas that have a neon green mouth.
I think it has to have the green mouth and the white lesions???
I will have to let others chime in regarding this... Keep the pics coming,

The white striations on the underside of the polyps (in both of the pics I posted, there are some closed up that show the white stripes on the underside), and the green neon slit mouth are supposed to be the way to classify Z. gigantus by sight. All the PE's I've seen have both characteristcs. I'm sure the scientists will find something that contradicts eventually (or just as likely based on funding, a hobbyist;)), but those are the guidelines right now.

fwiw seattleguy....I would not call those magicians. I would call them speckled RPE's like most simialr polyps you see.

To be sure, Im nto saying that one polyp is necessarily nicer than the other, Im just saying they do not have the characteristics that make magicians.....magicians

What sets magicians apart and makes them a little extra unique, is the color and substance of the spackling regardless of how much of it there is and irregardless of potential environmental morphing.

The color of the spackling on magicians is a exact match, and extension of the tell tale color of a "PE's" mouth, which as gflat said, is a mandatory characteristic of any zoanthus gigantus I have ever heard of. It doesnt make it absolute as he said....but at this point that is the general consensus. The form the spackels takes on in any condition is different as well, but if you look closely you will see the color thing I am talking about, even if from afar it may appear the same

I have never seen that on any polyp before. It doesnt make them nicer, but it does make them more unique in my mind, and ive said it before and Ill say it again. Anybody has the polyps that I just described and pictured regardless fo what you or me wants to call them. Get in touch. Ill let you stick your hands in my tank and tit for tat grab whatever you want polyp for polyp :)

Are you saying that magicians have a very specific speckled pattern?

I am asking not arguing? If so and the ones you have pictured is what they look like then I would say the Red one's I have pictured in this thread look better than the original. JMO

I think the more sparkles they have the better because they stand out more.

I am not true collector so having one with linage means very little to me but I do like to be informed?

I guess I will name mine what ever I want.LOL I like sand man palys.:)

I am not talkign about lineage, nor am i talking about which one may or may not be more be more attractive. I am simply talking about why they are not the same polyp, regardless of any environmental induced morphing.

The amount of spackling you see on any given polyp is an environmentally induced morphing, and in some cases the presence of any spackling at all in the first place

lineage means nothing to me either, and I am a serious collector. Read the "true" thread I posted recently

all lineage and "true" means is that you got the coral directly from the person who originally named it. If anyone is to think that is the only coral of its kind ever collected, then they need to p[ut down the crack pipe.

Most of the time lineage and the word true is abused even if it did mean anything. it generally goes like this:

they got the coral from a guy, who knows a guy, who knows a guy whos sister did the guy who originally named it, so they know for a fact their coral is "true" becasue they clearly got it directly from the original colony

I think I follow you but the thing is that the pic's from coral pedia and the picture you have do not have green inside the mouth so therefor they are not PE but can still be called magicians.

Maybe that is what you meant anyhow and I am to slow to get it. LOL

I am a collector of coral just not LE and named corals like many are.

the mouth is green and they are PE's. The shadow is covering the color up.

the blue magicians you linked are not people eaters. I didnt include them in this thread

they are just names

I didnt name magicians even though that is my pic on CP and the only pic available. They have been around, I just havent seen them in some time.

The blue magicians are one of my favorites incidentally and can be huge in the right conditions

Thanks for the clarification.

Now more pictures guys!

Beside I love checking out all the deferent variations that are out there.
