Altho Erosa erosa isn't what we consider a "true" stonefish, it does belong to the family Synanceiidae. They're a temperate water species that ranges from southern Japan to northern Australia. The pitted stonefish is a smaller fish, generally about 4" - 5", so about the size of its cousin the bearded ghoul (also pictured above). They possess a potent venom, on par with the stingfishes and waspfishes, which also belong to the same family.
IMHO/IME, they're a really cute little fish that once established will litterally "bounce" over to see what the food god is bringing (their large heads make them look like little bouncing balls). They have the ability to change color drastically:
I really enjoy keeping this fish, and the only real drawback is keeping a temperate setup for it. It's a great tankmate for the bluefin lionfish (Parapterois heterura), which is also a temperate species:
my yellow fin tang (not the actual picture of the fish) mine looks about the same just take off a few inches, its hard to get a pic of him cause there is too much lighting coming from my windows creating glare, but i will give it a try at night when the sun goes down....
Totally thought the hole in that acrylic was a loading symbol and I almost waited for it to start spinning. Lol. Plus I was wondering why it wasn't centered. Been at work for 24 hours. Thats my excuse.
