how big does it get? one of the larger moray eels? How mean? Like a Tessalata? Experience with him/it?
Thanks in advance
He's one of the smaller species, actually :]. They only get 20", but they're thick for an eel that of that length (even in photos of ones in the wild). This guy is only about 20" long, but as thick as my upper arm (not including his dorsal fin)!
I'll say he's aggressive because his eyesight is awful, and he thinks he's getting fed if anyone stands in front of the tank too long only days after his last feed. He'll strike at fish, at rocks, at the magfloat, at the water siphon, at urchins, at coral, and at me (through the glass mostly, and when I'm doing tank maintenance I have to have my eye on him). It's really important that when he gets in the feeding mood that he is fed as fast as I can thaw some food. He eats 5-7 medium prawns in a sitting, or half a fillet of fish. When he's not in that mood he's quite peaceful and always has half of his body hanging out in view, just laying on the rocks. It's not a shy species, so it's good if you actually want to see your eel instead of it always hiding in the rocks.
I had to stop feeding my other fish meaty foods everyday because the smell of meat in the water makes him go back into feeding mode, and I refuse to feed him more than twice a week as that can be bad for eels. Now the fish only get meaty food twice a week right after the eel eats to his fill. I had to buy some flake food and use my pellets more for the other guys.
