Show Your Tank!

did you build the lights? if so i hope you took pics and can post a build thread on it. that would be interesting.

+1!
Where did you get the LED's? I am kinda regretting purchasing the MH light where as I could have bought a LED for almost the same price. Might be up for sale soon. Still doing research on the LED's since there are so many out there now. Keep us posted!

Thanks!

The LEDs I got from nanotuners.com. The ones I got are the XR-E series in white, the RBs (royal blues) are also the ones commonly used. I see they went down in price a little

I got two generic LED drivers from dealextreme.com (which I don't recommend, I fried one almost immediately)

I am going to switch the LED drivers to a single dimmable buckpuck from ledsupply after frying one of the drivers. I had to put all 4 LEDs on a single driver so right now they are way-underdriven. They're probably getting only 300-400mA. With the new buckpuck I'll be able to crank them up to 1000mA and be able to fiddle with the color temperature.

A good deal on a power supply for LEDs is the Potrans one from MPJA. This one will support up to 6 buckpucks and each buckpuck can handle up to 6 LEDs

Its totally worth it, I hadn't gone to Radio Shack to buy geeky stuff like thermal grease and solder since I was maybe 13-14

Audrey, the tank looks very nice. Everything in it looks good.
Hector nice looking set up. The lights would sure be a nice project to have at a meeting. You could talk about them and let everyone know what and how to go about building their own fixture.

Hector, the tanks look great. I love how the mantis looks. I really wanna do a mantis tank.
I finally started a little tank to try and raise some clown babys. If it works I will post some pics. I have always wanted to try to raise some for the challenge and have read several threads on RC about it. I don't know how successful I will be but it will be a fun experiment. They should hatch tonight or tomorrow morning and will try to snap a shot.
For anyone that is thinking it , NO, THEY WILL NOT BE FOR SALE AND I WANT TO MAKE THAT CLEAR SO I DON'T COME OFF WRONG ON HERE!!!!
Dennis

D- I really look forward to hearing the report on your hatchery and seeing some pictures. I have never, pretty sure most of the members also, have not seen fish in their infancy stage. Your pictures and posts will be educational to everyone.

Hector- I really dig the LED setup and the Fluval zero edge tank. SWR in Albuquerque has a beautiful LED tank, I think it is 40-50 gallons, and it is super nice. I think LEDs are a great new lighting technique that puts out minimal heat. I think they are very efficient on the light bill too. Nice system!

dennis. when i first read it, i thought you were hatching mantis. i thought that would be cool. the clowns will be super cool, i like baby fish. what color are they/or should they be.

can't wait for the pics

Nice looking little LED fixture. I really like it. I sure hope LED's turn out to be the future. It would be nice to have less heat in the tank and less energy consumption. I am working on putting one together myself. I have been talking to the guys at reefledlights.com. I am looking to get a couple of these strips https://www.reefledlights.com/products-page/leds/cree-xr-e-led-strip/ and putting them on either side of my MH to test them out. I plan to use a dimmable driver so I can control the output a bit. If I like what I see I will get a couple more and replace the MH altogether.

Well, upon doing research and for my wallet sakes, I have narrowed it down to either doing an LED myself or these guys: http://www.americanaquariumproducts.com/LEDLights.html . They use the CREE XRE emitters, I think 12 watt, where I have read in other MFG's don't tell you what kind of emitter they use. This is very important w/LED's, since they are one of only a few LED's that can support a reef system--CREE's. So with the LED's, the brand of the emitter is very important. If I do decide to do a DIY project for an LED system, I will let ya'll know and start a thread. I think that there will be a brand new MH light for sale in the horizon.

Thanks for the link Benjabba. That is cool that they come in pre-assembled strips. Do you know approximately how long they are? I also like the price. You should check the link I provided, they have a dimmable timer that simulates the lunar cycles and day cycles. It is expensive, but it is the cheapest one that I have found so far.

Thanks!

The strips are 12" long. They also sell the heatsinks which I believe are just over 8" wide. It is my understanding that you can get 4 strips on each heatsink. I will probably start with two strips and two heatsinks. (One per heatsink) Initially I will run them both on the same driver. If I decide to add more stips I will order them in two's and add another driver. I will check out the link you sent for sure.
