Shy Emperor

I have a new Emperor Angel that likes to hide in the back of the tank behind the rocks. I know that all new fish like to hide at first. It has been alost 2 weeks. He doesn't even come out when I feed the tank. I am lucky to see him one time per day for just a minute or so. When should I worry that he doesn't like to come out and "play".
I have had problems keeping one of these fish and I am a bit paranoid about him croaking.

It's not really uncommon. It can take fish several weeks to adjust to a new environment. If it's a small specimen, it will tend to hide more. If tank conditions are good and it is not being harassed, it will eventually feel less threatened and make more advances out into the open. Most of the angels I've kept display the same behavior.

I agree with Jerry that it's normal and inside the rockwork is their comfort zone. If you want to see them more just feed more.

I introduced an Emperor(3") to my tank 4 weeks ago and only this last week does he not hide when I am in the room. If I am walking around he will still dart into the rocks. When I am not around though he is out because when I walk into the room he was always out. He still will only eat clam on a half shell and nori.

The earlier you switch him over to frozen and dry food the better. Once it gets used to live food the harder it will be for you to switch.
