SI or Onyx Percs?

I've had a little pair of clowns for 18 months now. I've asked this question before, but I've never gotten a definite answer and now they're much older. This pair is either SI or Onyx. The male looks like a Black Ocellaris, but he's not. Black Ocellaris normally go from dark orange, to brown, then black, but mine was orange and then the black just crept around his whole body and left his butt-fin, his chest, and his face orange. The female's blackness isn't as strong. I'm 100% sure that they're the same type of clown. They're either SI or Onyx, but I don't know which. I'm thinking Onyx because Onyx clowns have more black than SI. Here's pictures from 20 minutes ago...

LOL yeah I posted here asking at the same time as I posted on Nano-Reef.com.
But I guess this thread is useless now that I already have an answer. :)

So, what was the answer?

By the way SI stands for Solomon Islands, which is a location. Onyx is a color variety. If they are percs, they could be both SI and onyx.

Like the person above though, from the pics you posted, I would say they are ocellaris.

Just to educate others as I answered his question over on NanoReef.

These are not from the Solomon Islands. After a couple of questions it was learned they were bred by Sustainable Aquatics. These are Onyx True Percula clownfish, not Ocellaris of a color variant found in the C-quest line of clowns.

LOL how can they be Ocellaris? There's not variant of Ocellaris that even comes close to looking like them. I'm 100% sure that they're Onyx. Here's another pic from like 6 months ago...

Look at the last 3 in the 3rd column that Nebthet -- those are all O's.

While it isn't exact, the cloudy ring around the eyes is what is making me think they are O's.
Notice the clear ring with my SI Percs,

When I first I got them 2 years ago,

If it weren't for the eyes I'd say you were wrong. Is there such thing as an Onyx Ocellaris? If they're Ocellaris, why is their coloration so much like an Onyx clown?

I believe you posted this question a few months ago, and I am going to stand by my answer and say they are ocellaris. The ring around the eye is one clue, plus, I dont know how to explain it, but after looking at probably thousands of ocellaris clowns throught many years, they just have that ocellaris look to them.

I'm convinced that they're Ocellaris now... but I've never seen any Ocellaris like these. Why do they have so much black on them?

The only ocellaris type that look like these are Sanjays Black Photons, which are a cross between an Onyx Percula and Black Occellaris. But again they have the clear eyes.

But, there have been some percula clowns bred that do have the darker eyes as opposed to the rimmed ones normally seen, especially with more black being on the face.

Either way, they are nice fish.

Sometimes, when Onyx clowns are hosted, they loose their black. This happened to my clowns when the male was hosted by the frogspawn and the female was hosted by the BTA. I moved the frogspawn and the BTA to my larger tank and they got their black back. To my knowledge, this would only happen to an Onyx clown and not an Ocellaris, but I could be wrong.
