sicce psk-600 and 1000 pumps?

I was perusing your website today and noticed that you will be getting new types of sicce pumps (the psk-600 and psk-1000) soon.

I currently have an xtreme 160 skimmer (with sicce psk 2500) that I am unhappy with - I find the pump is quite noisy, although the skimmer does pull lots of gunk from the water.

My question is what are the advantages of the new sicce pumps over the original 2500? Is it simply less power usage? Is it quieter? Does it improve the performance of the skimmer? I am wondering whether it is worthwhile to get one of the new pumps for my xtreme 160 to replace my noisy old sicce psk 2500 model.

Hi Raymond,
We will be getting the new SX models at the end of September. And they will cost a little more than the current Extreme models. As for upgrading the pumps to the newer ones, we will be offering that at a later date. We just don’t have any new pumps yet to offer. But it can be done in the future.

Thanks.

OK I had a good long talk with a friend of mine who has tested the PSK-2500, PSK-600 and the PSK-1000. For his up coming new skimmers. He told me the PSK-600 is a weak pump next to PSK-2500 in stock form. Now the PSK-2500 with the Red Demon Pinwheel pulls more air than the PSK-1000 and moves more water 950LPH with stock white pinewheel-1200LPH with Red Demon Pinwheel.
All I know is my Warner Marine K2 Cone Skimmer with red demon Pinwheel Is pulling 42SCFH of air in 7.5" of water with a PSK-2500. On my watt meter is reading 23 watts.

Once we get the new skimmers in stock we'll take a look at them and see how they perform. The PSK-2500 is a very strong pump, but of course they can make some noise as most who run them know.

I asked Jeremy K.'s questions and here was the response.
Hi Raymond,
Yes the new PSK600 and PSK1000 are better and quieter than the 2500. The Extreme SX160 will have the PSK600. The Extreme SX200, 250, and 350 will have the PSK1000. These pumps have been more designed to work with a skimmer rather than the 2500 was just a water pump. We will have the option for everyone to upgrade probably later this year. We haven’t even received the skimmers in stock yet. We will be getting them at the end of September. We don’t have any spare pumps yet either as they all went to the skimmers. But we will have them available later this year for upgrade.

Thanks.

Interesting. Thanks for the info. It will be interesting to see just how much "better and quieter" these pumps are. I was considering junking my xtreme 160 and getting a vertex in-180. But if I can get away with just upgrading the pump of my xtreme 160 to something better and silent, that will be, by far, the cheaper option.

I have ran three PSK-2500 and they never maid noise. I must be a lucky one.
I had a SWC-250 Skimmer with two PSK-2500 and I ran them with Mesh Mods, stock yellow pinwheels, Warner Marine white pinwheels and his Red Demon pinwheels with no noise. I also Have a PSK-2500 on my Warner Marine K2 Cone skimmer and I have used His white pinwheel and I am using for the last year his red Demon pinwheel with no noise. I love the performance of the Red Demon and the PSK-2500 and with the K2 skimmer is very well balance together.
I do get every once in awhile the pump starts in reverse and that is no big deal for me. I just turn the power on and off and it starts forward. all is good.

But I am a BIG Kid I like new things and I like to improve on what I have. That is why I was looking forward to the PSK-1000. But if it can not do better than the PSK-2500 and the Red Demon pinwheel I will just stay with what I have. I was hoping for more air pull.

How do you get 42scfh out of that skimmer? I have the exact same setup and the max I've gotten is 37scfh @ 8.5" of water.

It might be your water is 1" more than mine. Or because I have high PH. My PH is 8.8 and yes I said 8.8 for PH. It has been like that for about 10 years now. I have tested so many times and had others tested for me in the NJ Reefers club. I do not add PH at all. I know someone will ask then whats my calcium at. It is at 660 and it has not drop below 600 in 10 years. I do not add calcium ether
I do clean my pump every month.

I am using a Dwyer RMB 0-50 SCFH of air gage. I am at 42 SCFH right now and at times it might go as high as 46 SCFH for a week or two. That might happen a couple times a year.

I finally got mine in the low 40s of SCFH... I noticed the impeller wasn't properly seeded when I was doing some maint. After re-seeding the impeller... bam 40+ SCFH... I'm a happy camper again. I just wish I could get to quiet down a little. I've read that a carbon fiber shaft will help. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this?

I've recommended carbon fiber shafts to a lot of people who have successfully made the switch to them, with quieter results. I haven't had anyone come back to say that it's made it worse. Another plus side to the CF shaft is that breakage is a lot less likely as well.
