he's too fast to take a picture of, but these show it pretty well

right behind his eye are those dots and if you look a bit closely they are indents.

is this normal? please help.

Perhaps the starting stages of HLLE +/or a bit of stress.

Good water quality and healthy food will help.

I would suggest focus on feeding. If its not feeding now then you might try some LBS .. if it starts to eat that then start to soak the LBS in some selcon or garlic .. with luck the fish will associate that smell with food and you can soak other food in the substance.

Hope this helps.

whats HHLE and whats lbs thank you for the info

he eats like a pig...almost anyting that i throw at him.

the local stores dont sell vitamin c and garlic suplements...are there any brands you suggest?

HLLE is head and lateral line erosion syndrom ... the causes are debated but often associated with nutrition, stess, etc.

LBS is live brine shrimp - a food source that almost every fish will eat. Great food source for fish that won't eat .. not a great food source for fish that already eat.

the parameters of my water are normal

what i feed them every morning is...a bit of dry seaweed in the clip frozen seaweed mixed with mysis shrimp /bryne and once every 2 days i squirt in some filter feeding food.

almost alll of the food gets eaten what doesnt the peermint shrimps and the cleaner shrimps along with the hermits gladly pick up.

so if i cant catch this tang...and even if i would i dont have a a spare tank to put him in what do you recommend is the best fist step to take?

I doubt very much that that is HLLE. Judging from the picture that is a relatively small, young tang. Erosion, generally takes many many months and occurs on more mature fish.

However, HLLE is detailed here:
http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2005-06/sp/index.php

No need to put the fish in a QT. HLLE is a slow affecting. If it is HLLE you have adequate time to reverse the problem. Better husbandry and a more robust staple of pellets* generally does a fish good and can reverse the affects.

*Kent makes great herbivore pellets. Mixed in with some Sera and Spectrum pellets you can get a good mix to keep you fish healthy. I tend to stay away from frozen foods. The fish sure love them, but they tend to be nutritionally narrow.
