Sick kitty, maybe from saltwater

We have a couple of kittens to ward off field mice. The younger one (+/- 4 months old) has recently been fighting diarhea and puke. Today she slept *most* of the day. Yesterday we took a stool sample to the vet. They left a message today saying it was negative for parasites. The only thing we can figure is that either she ate loads of dogfood or drank too much sump water (both observed).

Anybody got ideas? TIA

Kevin,

When we took our rottweiler camping, he drank a lot of ocean water. Everytime she did it, she would end up with diarrhea. I don't know if cats would have the same side effect.

We been meaning to ask our doctor to see if Imodium AD is safe for dogs.

Pepcid AC

Pepcid AC

My vet has me give 1/4 of a 10 mg pepcid tablet to my cats when they've been puking too much. I don't know if it would help, but would be (edit:*relatively*) safe to try. My cats are 6-7 pounds, so for a small kitten I'd pick the smallest 1/4 of the pill (they usually crumble, so finding a small piece isn't a problem)

The biggest problem is the osmotic effect on such a small body(stomach), offsetting the ionic balance.

But if you took it to the vet, I am sure it will pull through.

I wasn't much of a cat person before I got my Pita....he makes my days better.

FWIW, I use an overflow to catch the spillover from my RODI jugs when filling them. The cat is always drinking out of it. You may consider something like that to ensure they always have a fresh water source. Good luck

I just talked to my Mom who had a cat boarding kennel for years. She wonders if the kitten has a dry nose and hot ears? If so that is probably why the kitten is drinking the salt water. She will need a antibiotic. If not she suggested the pepcid or the liquid pink stuff. Our vet recommended it too.

Thanks everyone. The issue was not saltwater. She was diagnosed with FIP. She has passed on.

I have to say the we adopted her from All About Pets and they handled the issue in a stand-up way. Without disclosing any details, suffice it to say they did the right thing without any prodding from us and that kind of decision making needs to be acknowledged.

Dots: cool photo! Nice character and tank... is PITA the acronym and/or the cat's name? I like it!

Kevin: Sorry for your loss.

Thanks everyone.

Steve: AAP went beyond customer service. They were not only sympathetic, but they handled the issue in a way we would not have expected. I recommend them.

Wow,
I just read this thread for the first time, not expecting this outcome...
:sad2:
Sorry to hear about your loss (from a fellow cat lover)
