Sick Kole Tang, Furan2 + Kanaplex + Metronidazole

I got a new Kole Tang. I quarantined him for 2 weeks without any problems.
A few days after he was in the main display he came down with fin rot and these big splotches on his side. The Splotches are only on one side.

I didn't see any of the other fish harassing him.


Does anyone know what this may be? I thought maybe he was stung my anemone or something because its only on the one side? Either way, I am thinking a bacterial infection has taken.

No other fish in the tank show any signs of problems.

I have him in a hospital tank now.
I have done 4 doses of Furan 2. (The only thing I could find at the Local Fish Store)
His tail rot looks about 50% better, and the splotches about 25% better.

Since he is not 100%, do I continue to dose with Furan 2? What is the max amount of doses?

Also, according to this site, www.americanaquariumproducts.com/Pimafix.html , I can mix Furan2 + Kanaplex + Metronidazole, which I would like to try, but don't know the procedure? Is it safe to mix the three? If so, do I dose all three at full strength? Or should I reduce the strength of each dose when combining?
I went ahead and ordered all three, so I have them now.

He has a low appetite, but eating.
No clouds in his eyes.
He swims upright and energetic.

i dosed all 3 full strenght in my tank. i do daily 50%wc and replenish meds at 50%

i would only stop when he is 100% cured

the combination works wonders!

QT is also a time to treat any many diseases.

QT also is a time for adaptation.

Disease control and adaptation are related in a fish's eagerness to eat medicated food.

Then there is external bacterial infection.

For my QT, I always cycle medium to support fish for 12 weeks of QT and I always setup UV properly against external bacterial infection.

How did you set up your QT tank? Why did you plan to QT for only two weeks?

To the OP, I had an orange shoulder tang that developed a bacterial infection. I had him in QTand treated him with Kanaplex and Bifuran+(No Furan2 available at the time). I kept him under medication for 7 days. I did water changes avery two days and applied new medication to maintain the levels. In my case, the bacterial marks stopped growing after 3 days. The Kanaplex says no more than 3 applications and the Furan 2 says maximum 4 doses. I suspect long term application may make a fish immune to future therapeutic benefit of these antibiotics.

Sorry, it is not always a matter of answering a question.

Look at the fish. Read about its state.

It is likely suffering from bacterial infection.

It is not eating well? Why? Internal parasites untreated? Ammonia?

The procedure/setup could be wrong.

Thanks for the replies.
I have been doing 25% water changes every other day, per the Furan instructions.
The Furan box says the treatment can be repeated if necessary, so I am assuming 8 total doses. Ive read several post where people have done that.
I decided to add the Kanaplex and Metro and will continue that thru Monday.
Making it 8 doses of Furan and 2 doses of Kanalex and Metro each.
Then thinking I will give the meds a break and see if he continues to heal on his on and go from there.

He is looking better everyday.

DallasNYC. Sounds good. Not sure about the 8 doses but I have not researched it and you have. It took a while for my tang to clear up the blemished skin but there is no sign of the infection at all.

If an antibiotic depresses nitrification, ammonia can build up.

It is likely fair to say that ammonia from excretion of fish is predictable.

But ammonia from decay of food and poop is less predictable.

25% WC every other day may not be enough if depression of nitrification is severe, or if there is no nitrification.

I have a SeaChem Ammonia Alert in the tank, but will run actual tests as well to keep an eye on it.

First, generally two weeks of QT does not eradicate ich

Second, as far as external bacterial infection is concerned, the factor of previous exposure/antibodies, and best nutrition all matter.

A fish can have no previous exposure to pathogenic bacteria in the DT.

Or a fish has not been sufficiently exposed to pathogenic bacteria that it brought in.

Bacteria are rather opportunistic and there is no eradication as in ich, but UV properly setup in QT and DT likely much reduce the incidents, IME.

Yes good choice. When his side is cleared up i might give him formalin bath. Avandss hows your fish.
