Silent and Failsafe Overflow System

The time is not a problem when you know it will kick in, it was actually 5 min. or less. I do have a surging sound coming from the siphon drain and I can feel the pipe vibrate a little when it makes that sound, why would it do that? All three drain pipes are 1.5" below the water level in the sump.

CHeck the bottom of the siphon pipe, is there any air being ejected? You could have a small leak. Does the water level in the sump fluctuate with the surges?

Will this system lose its equilibrium over time as the pump produces less and less output between cleanings?

Are there any shortfalls anyone has experienced with the system?

No, the system is self tuning over a very wide range of flows. That is what is so nice about it. Durso, Stockman and similar standpipes do not self tune well (if at all).

Thanks Bean, no the water doesn't flucutate with the surge or too little to detect. Yes, I can see some bubbles at both the siphon and open channel discharge. A few bubbles at the open channel discharge maybe normal, but there should be not any a the siphon end correct? That means sucking in some air on the siphon, maybe at the down turned 90 it is not glued in. I really doubt it being a glued joint or union since there are no water leaks.

Yes, that stopped the air surge in the siphon drain! It is hard to keep the open channel from making noise without completely stopping it, but it can be done with just a trickle, I had planned on using that to feed my refuguim but afraid it won't be enough flow at this level so guess I'll have to use a ph for that. I wanted to post a few pics of my system but it won't upload .jpg wonder why? Can they be changed to one of the valid file ext. below?

Upload your photos to photobucket and then post the [ img ] tags to make them active. I've found it easier to do it that way.

My tank should be in the next week or so, So having a photo example is always helpful to see.

robert, i just read another 90g build thread where the OP used this Overflow System and had a T off the siphon drain that sent flow to the fuge.

Bean, as long as the end in the skimmer section and the end in the fuge are both below the water level around 1"-1.5", then you still keep the "integrity" of the silent and failsafe right?

Here are a few of the system in action. Forgive if there are too many pictures, I'm just another proud parent!

well that didn't work. cpeisher, yeah that's the way I had my last tank set up, but that made it pretty cluttered over the sump and I was hoping the open channel drain would be enough but it is too noisy with more flow. I'll try something else with the pics.

you could always do the T and ball valves under the tank but near flush with the ceiling of the sump (bottom of the top of the stand, because that clarifies it ...haha) or just use a mj 6, 9 or 12 from the sump to the fuge maybe?

man that is a ton of plumbing back there...you've probably got more $ in plumbing fittings than i have in the actual DT i bought :-)

Man, it's clean looking and i'd be proud to call that mine any day...

I'm assuming that the setup actually functioned to a satisfactory level, you just didn't like all the room it took up?
