Skimmer, Lifereef vs MTC

Im really enjoying my MTC...its a beast. low maintenance, consistent and relatively quiet. I have no complaints.

Here are a couple. I use a sicce syncra 3.0 to feed it from my sump.

hey ive got a lifereef but im going to switch over to mtc as soon as i can sell mine. ive got it listed on craigslist. dont really want to deal with shipping.

ca1ore, why did you switch from the hsa-1000 to the dual mazzei? also i wish there was a mtc skimmer club like the lifereef skimmer club.

yes its a handy feature of the lifereef how he routes the moist air.

i think the configuration of lr 36" and down is a bit off. obviously it works though. ive read what people have written and seen their pictures of the mtc. im impressed.

i would like to know the ins and outs of the hsa series and if anyone has the 36" mvx what their thoughts are.

Love my 30" LR.
What problem are you having?

problem is this... me. im my own worst enemy. after using the skimmer, i dont agree with the input tube going through the top flange and taking up all that real estate in the body. in my eyes, it should be a centered neck and the input from the venturi should be through the side of the skimmer body in some high speed low drag fashion. im not an engineer but i do think the neck could also be slightly bigger. not a lot but a little. now dont get me wrong, this is still the best skimmer ive owned and used to date.

i think that mtc has some design pluses in the mvx series. i also think that while the thicker material mtc uses doesnt make it a more efficient skimmer it does make it a better, structurally built skimmer. so far the only thing that lr has over mtc is the way lr draws air through the cup to help clean the venturi. if one where wanting that on an mtc, its just a drill and tap fix. not a deal breaker.

More 'circumstance' than 'intention' :) I had used the HSA1000 since early in its conception, and when I 'retired' from the hobby in 2008, I mothballed it in the attic (figuring I'd be back). Unfortunately, the skimmer was a victim of a 'landslide' in the attic and was irretrievably broken. When I returned to the hobby in 2013, I limped along with a pinhead skimmer (er, sorry .... pinwheel ) for a bit before deciding to buy another MTC. There were a few minor things I didn't like about the HSA, and I prefer a recirculating skimmer, so when the opportunity arose to get the dual mazzei .... I did.

I would have been quite happy to get another HSA1000 (particularly with the updated design) though.

Haha, understood.
More long term user reviews of the MTX would be nice.
If you get one, you and gregr can start an MTX Skimmer Club thread. :D

Very impressive skimmer and price wise compared to the LifeReef I wish i had seen this post before I bought my VS3-48 Lifereef skimmer. I could have saved $300 :headwally:

That being said, I really do like my 4 foot Lifereef Skimmer. Totally get the point about the 1" mazzei vs the 3/4" mazzei. I'm currently running a single 1" Mazzei on my skimmer... will be adding a second 1" mazzei and upgrading the pump to a Blueline 70.
