Skimmer, Lifereef vs MTC

Hey guys I'm strongly considering upgrading to a MTC for my 400 gallon system. Was originally thinking about a MVX but the dual mazzei has caught my eye. There isn't a lot of userbexperience with them but it seems a few of you have been running thenbfor 1+ years. Most of your initial feedback seems very positive. Does that still hold true today? Do you find yourself having to adjust often to keep it dialed in? How often do you need to clean the mazzeis? Thanks!

Happy with mine, yes. I do feed the skimmer from a dedicated pump in order to keep the water levels stable, and I flush water through the mazzei injectors every 12 hours to keep them clear of salt creep. The injectors also need periodic inspection to ensure no debris is blocking them.

Thanks, from some of the pictures I've seen it looks like there are unions that allow you to remove the injectors. Do you have to drain the skimmer or is there a valve that you can use to isolate them?

The latter.

At some point I plan to experiment with pulling moist air into the MTC to see if that obviates the need for the venturi flush.

Very happy with mine as well.

There is no need for adjustment. As long as the feed pump is feeding the same rate of water, then no adjustment said.

I have the venturis suck up come RO water daily as well.

I'm not sure how effective the moist air being drawn is as I also have (sitting in my basement) a Lifereef VS30 and I still found that I got better performance when I let the venturi suck in water.

I can at least tell you that I've never had a clogged venturi on the Lifereef.
Now, it probably hasn't run much longer than 8 months before getting a complete vinegar bath just because i happened to be cleaning out the sump or something at the time, but the humid air does seem to work.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm going to call tomorrow and place an order. I thought about asking him to tap the cup for the airline but I currently run it outside to keep the pH up. I like what you did with rinsing the injector. Ill need to adapt that to my setup. What type of flow are you running through it? 2 to 3x your system volume.

hi

i just purchased a 36" MVX and I can not be happier. The build is bullet proof. I think the lifereef design is flawed with that tube running down the entire column.

I chose to run it with the fluval SP4 over a mag 18 or blueline. It is working very well so far--about 4 days.

What did you choose to buy?

What's the best energy efficient pump you can run with these skimmers? Seems to me they are good skimmers but energy hogs especially if used in California.

I am running the Vectra L1 on a MTC 30" single injector skimmer ... granted, the skimmer is across the room and the pump is also feeding my chaeto reactor and carbon reactor, but, so far it is doing amazing ... the build quality is amazing ... it is built like a tank ... very clean and proven design ... I couldn't be happier - if I had it to do over again, I may consider going with the recirculating skimmer design that MTC offers as I think that would work better on my setup, but, that is just typical reef dreaming/second guessing

These things seem to rock. I'm looking to swap out the Beckett on my 240 gallon cube and am considering one of these. I like the compactness of a needlewheel but see things do seem to pull some serious gunk. Also seem to be set and forget which is what I like.
Any recommendations for MTC on a 240 heavy stocked?

Corey
