Skimmer Opinions

So I'm thinking about getting the coralife needle wheel skimmer from dr's foster and smith (LINK)

Anyone have any personal experiences (positive or negative) with this specific skimmer or the brand in general? I'd be getting the 125 gallon skimmer for my 90G tank.

I can't say on that particular skimmer, but I have a reef octopus NWB 150 on my 90 and it performs really well.

The reef octopus is my second choice - it's just much more expensive and the coralife one has good reviews on the site.

that skimmer is junk its got way to many peices takes up way to much realestat in the tank a pain to clean i got the octopus after and never looked back its a paper weight lol sorry just steering you in the righ direction

No I definitely appreciate your input!

But it does have the option of being a hang on back skimmer - so only the input and output would be in the sump.

Thanks!

I've heard those skimmers are tough to dial in.

Personally, I'd save up and go with an Octopus. Once you are a member for 90 days, the buying/selling forums will show up. They come up very frequently.

I've had square Tunzes on my tanks before; I think they did a fine job and when the failed to pull a thick nog it was time for a vinegar run. I'm now using a larger sized Octo and would buy another. My 2000 series would do an awesome job on a 90!

I agree with holding out and looking for a god deal on a used one. My best skimmers were bought used. I bought and sold an octopus 150 and 200 for less than the coralife. I also picked up my current ATB skimmer for not much more than what you would pay for the new coralife.

+1

Dont' waste your money on the coralife, save it and looked for a decent used one. Read through the posts, there are still a few used ones floating around on URS.

Reef octs are great, but not to go off topic, why are you using a hob if you have a sump

Sorry if my comment confused the subject. My current skimmer is in-sump and the next one will be too - I was just commenting on the ability of the coralife to be a HOB because the one poster said it takes up too much real estate in the sump.

The Reef Shoppe recommended either Reef Octopus or ASM - the ASM is the brand they use in the store and on all their installs. Price-wise they are the same and I have heard good things on here about the octopus. Anyone have any opinions on the ASM?

sorry i meant takes up allot of room in tank. but if you have a sump by all means i would def get an octo in sump skimmer. or any other skimmer for that matter lol it really is a horrible skimmer.

haha thanks :-)

the coralife is off the table.

There is a turboflotor 1000 on craigslist for $150 obo - and the poster said that it's better than a reef octopus (LINK)

I've not heard of this brand and since reef octopus or ASM were recommended I'm more tempted to go with one of them.

I think that's a wise choice to stay away from no name ones. Especially used no name ones. If your looking for something used, I think G had one for around that price not sure though...

I will say my first gen bubble blaster bombed, but the problem was solved in less than a weeks time and without any hassle! Great customer service goes along way for me.

I use two ASM 4xx s and have had them for over 6years. I bought them pre octopus but wouldn't trade them . Though, I've read some good reviews on the octopus line . The asms, I have, have been trouble free and very productive.

Glad you took the coral life off the table.
