Skimmer Q&A Thread

would you say the sro5000 would be a step up?

if price is not an issue what would be the absolute best choice from your experience???

it would better balanced but about the same size.

The supermarin 250 is one of the nicest around. really a nice design and sweet skimmer. It is on the top of the list of best skimmers out there for sure.

Thanks for the great info. As I was looking at your suggestions, I ran across the ATB Elegance 200 pro, SRO 3000SSS, BK SM200 and the SWC230. All have a small footprint that meet my dimensions. Would any of these be ideal for my needs. 180-200gal total volume, med-heavy bio load and ultra quiet? The cone designs on all of these units look pretty nice.

Thanks, awesome help BTW.

the bk sm 200 is the best in that group IMO.

In need for some advice from the "guru"...:)

Setting up a frag tank (9 x 2 x 1): 138 gallons
and sump: 90 gallons
Having the water level a little lower I guess total water volume should be around 200-210 gallons

I will keep mostly SPS and LPS and maybe 2 or 3 smaller fish.
I got some advice having a lighter bioload I shouldn't get an oversized skimmer for performance issues.

For those reasons would you recommend the Royal-Exclusiv Alpha 170 Cone or should I still look into the Royal-Exclusiv Alpha 250?

Thanks for any advice
Michael

If those or the 2 you want then the 170 would be just fine.

Hello skimmer experts. Hoping for your input on the best skimmer for around $300 for a 75gal tank. From all the reading I've done, reef octopus seems to be coming out on top and I'm considering either the extreme xs 160, the SRO-1000INT, or the NWB150. Any thoughts? Or perhaps you want to steer me in a completely different direction? :p Available sump space isn't really an issue as I'll plan the sump around the skimmer I end up choosing.

If this question has already been answered and I missed it, my apologies! Just point me in the right direction please :)

Thanks. That is a great looking skimmer. Pricey too. That is definitely the one I am going to shoot for. I still have to get a few other items as well. Would you mind rating the others so I can have a list of a few top performers to choose from for my 180-200gal med-heavy bio load build?

BK SM200 (first pl)
ATB Elegance 200 pro
Vertex Alpha 170 or 200
SRO 3000SSS
SWC230

Thanks a bunch for your help BTW.

3000int

3000int

So I got the 3000int based on mojo's recommendation. I love the skimmer thank you Mojo. I do have a question. I got a really good deal on a pre-owned but brand new one. When I got it, it was missing the Schedule 80 piece that goes on the pump that connects to the skimmer body. The person I bought it from called the place he bought the skimmer from and they wanted $40 for the piece ( I told him to hold off buying it until we look around). It looks like 1/2 of a Schedule 80 union but in metric? Does anyone has an extra one of these they will sell or knows exactly what it is ( Size and make or link to it). I went to the local hardware store and there Schedule 80 unions where not even close... That is why I think it is metric. If anyone has replaced a pump for this skimmer it looks like they would have gotten a new one so I am hoping someone has an extra lying around.

What is the ideal water depth for this skimmer?
Thanks for everything,

The sea side aquatics cs1, the sro 2000 int, and the jns sk2 are at the top of my list right now. The octo xs 160 is another great choice just depends on the sump depth.

I would get a hold of reefspecialty or coralvue direct. These are kind of hard to come by.

The pump on my SRO 1000 just crapped out. Is there another pump I should put in rather than the bubble blaster that comes with it.

I just purchased an ATI bubble master (bm200) to use on my 180 gallon mixed reef. (softies and LPS - light fish load, but want to stock a heavier fish load).

My tank is a standard 180 and I have a 20 gallon sump. (total water volume estimated at 150-160 gallons)

It seems to be working very well right out of the box and even though I purchased it new, is pulling quite a bit of very dark caramel to black colored skimmate out. (Tank has not had a skimmer on it for a couple of years - nitrates were getting out of hand is what made me want to purchase a skimmer for it) There were space and water level constraints that made this skimmer a good choice for me. I did get it at a pretty significant discount which is always nice....

Anyway - a couple of questions for you. From the research I did - it appeard that the BM200 would be a better match for my tank than the BM250. Do you agree or should I have gone larger? also - I know some have had issues with the pump starting when turning off the skimmer - mine has started every time with no issues, but there is quite a bit of chatter on startup (goes away withing a couple of seconds). Is this any cause of concern? (skimmer is only turned off when cleaning/emptying the collection cup - about every 4-5 days.)

Anyway - your thoughts???

Thanks,

Michael

the noise at startup is common for that pump. no concern there. The startup isnt as much as an issue as the rotation it starts. you will get slightly different performance. Its just the design of the volute.

The sicce psk 2500 pump was a water pump converted over to a skimmer pump. Pumping roughly 700 gph of water as a water pump it did just fine. as a skimmer pump meshed out it does pull around 900 lph of air but fails to move a ton of water. The skimmer will do fine on your system but I would of opted for something newer that pulled similar air and more water turnover. The 250 uses the same pumps but uses two of them. I would of gotten a SRO 3000 or a JNS sk3. But your skimmer will work for you fine. It isnt going to make or break your tank. Everythign will still grow and be much better off now that you have a skimmer.
