Skimmer Q&A Thread

Looking for the smallest skimmer which will perform very well on an very heavy stocked 90. Been out of the hobby for a while and dont know what is good these days

I'm in the same boat searching for a skimmer. Looking for a small footprint. Currently have a BM Curve 5 that was on my 60 cube. Now in a 93 cube and considering the Simplicity 240 which is DC powered at a good price or the Seaside Aquatics CS7. Anybody have any experience with those two skimmers. The skimmer section of the sump is 10" x 8.25". Thanks

I do not know much about either of those skimmers but my choice for that size tank would be RLSS r6-I that I have used I know it is a good skimmer. The Simplicity are just too new,. Seaside uses decent pumps sicce. Both would probably be ok..

How much room do you have?

If little room RLSS R6-I and if enough room I like ATB 840 v2.
My favorite would be the atb 840v2 though for that load. That is what I have on my 90 and I have anthias that get fed around 6 times a day.

Agree with this and definitely need to know dimensions in the sump, water depth, and height above. I wouldn't just get the smallest possible. I'd get what will fill out the space you have balanced for your tank and load.

Shred thanks for the recommendation. I hadn't looked at the RLSS R6-I. I had looked at the DB6-i. My concern with the Simplicity was also the limited information because it's new. Checking out the RLSS R6-I

I could use some suggestions. I have a reefer 170 and started my cycle with TBSaltwater package. After 24 hr I want to start running my skimmer (reef Octo 110 classic 110int) at night. As you can see from the video I have too much flow with the gate fully open. https://vimeo.com/151240969 is it too low in the skimmer section? It's new and yes I know it will require breaking in but I don't think those are the issues here.
Thanks in advance for suggestions and advice..

How Much of the skimmer is submerged, usually no more than 7-8" IMO.
You can raise the unit out of the water to dryer fome.
Be sure the air tube is open and not kinked - it looks a bit like when i put my finger over my air tube inlet.
Make sure you are not dosing near the unit.

Thanks. It's sitting in the skimmer section of the reefer sump. I'll try raising it an inch or two. What do you usually use for raising it?

Sorry for posting in an independent thread before this, but I didn't realize there was a thread for skimmer recommendations.

After over two years struggling with my Tunze 9410, I am just generally unhappy with its finicky nature and lack of controllability. I don't know if it's oversized or not for my tank, but I'm ready to move on to a better skimmer.

My tank is 90 gallons total water volume mixed reef with a focus on SPS, medium bioload (1 tang, 1 foxface, 2 ocellaris, midas blenny, yellow watchman, carpenter wrasse, coris wrasse, and 2 bartlett anthias), heavy feeding for the anthias.

However, my sump is quite tight so I can only fit a 12x12 square skimmer in it (or less), and I have 23" in height available. Sump height is 7.5".

I've been thinking about a few options that would work with my constraints - which would be the best for my tank?
1. RLSS R6i
2. Bubble Magus Curve 5
3. AquaMaxx C-01

I've used Reef Octopus before and have had mixed results, so I'm omitting their line for the moment.

12"x12" is plenty for a 90

I'd look at Seaside aquatics if looking at the bubble magus series. It includes a much better pump.

Seaside Aquatics ES7 is what I would do. For the Aquamaxx I'd go for the CO2 if you can fit it. Otherwise the newer cones Q-2.

Your next issue is going to be that sump depth? Is that 7.5" the water level from thee bottom up? Any way to get that a touch deeper?

For most everything listed the water level would optimally be at ore more then 8 ". The bubble magus/seaside aquatics recommends over 9". The CO1 wants over 9". The Aquamaxx CO2, and the CoQ-2 recommends 8" and may do fine at 7.5" just possibly a bit more touchy.

I designed my sump around the Tunze (which required a lower water level). I'm kinda stuck with the height unfortunately, unless I can figure out how to put another piece of glass in there.

ATB Nano One would be a good fit.

Anyone have any tricks to getting the collection cup off of a Skimz SN143? BRS is closed until Monday (which is a holiday so maybe Tuesday). I have used quite a bit of force, and I think if I used any more it would break. If I have to take the whole thing out of my sump (not an easy task) then it is never going back in.

twreefer, you should have used a little bit of silicone grease or even vasoline on the o ring, what method are you using to try and remove it ? a little rock from side to side will usually work it up and off
