Skimmer Q&A Thread

Vertex IN 100 Protein Skimmer in use since July 2009.

For no apparent reason, the skimmer is pushing water to the top of the skimmer. Literally just below the edge. I have not changed any settings, nor have I added any chemicals to the tank.

I did attempt to adjust the "open" "closed" a little 24 hours after this started and I cannot get it to change.

Any ideas?

Thank you

Sounds like your air inlet is getting clogged. may not be in the line but in the venturi itself.

Looking for a skimmer to for my 55gal anemone DT that would go in my 20L sump. I was thinking a Vertex IN-80, Tunze 9005, or a Bubble Magus NAC6. Should I go with one of these or something different?

Looking for idea for a new skimmer for new build of around 300g total system. 190g DT pure sps. currently have a mrc2 not big enough for new upgrade plus power hungry. Looking for some type of recirculating and can be gravity fed. Have room to run external or internal. No height or noise problems since the sump is in the basement. Have looked into deltecs and h&s as long as reflo. Just started looking into the differnt cones. What would you recommend?

What is the best skimmer for a 180 gallon, medium to heavy stocking?

I agree that is open to alot of things. But you will want to make sure the pum moves enough water as well as pulling a good amount of air and is balanced. first skimmer that comes to mind is the ATB 1050 then the Warner MArine AS200. Not sure of you budget but I would start there and possibly look at the new super reef octo's and the msx 250A

I would look at the new deltecs. Very nice for your recirc ap. or even the super reef octo external

Hey guys. I currently have an RS80 on my 55g tank with 10g sump (55g NWV). I have a light-medium bio load right now, but plan to get heavier as I stock more corals. On top of that I dose vodka.

First off, does it make sense for me to upgrade my skimmer or will an RS80 be fine unless my bioload gets REALLY heavy?

If so, what skimmer would you recommend? I don't have much room in the sump, so I was thinking about an MSX160. I like the bubble plate, profile, and pump under the skimmer. Any other skimmer models that compete? Would that be too much overkill for my tank? I probably won't upgrade until I increase stock levels a bit more.

Last question: as far as performance, how does the MSX160 compare to the BK Mini 160. I know the BK is better build quality, quieter, less power consumption and probably less quirky, but is the ultimate performance going to be worth 3X the price? I'm pretty budget conscious and noise/power consumption aren't really important to me. I can deal with build quality also as long as performance is high.

Hi I have a deltec ap703 on a 1000 litres system is this a bit over kill it is a sps system,my other question is should I be wet skimming or dry .many thanks dave

Hey Mojo,
What skimmer do you recommend for an oceanic 58g rimless(same as yours), and a 40g sump/fuge?

Also, do you think one MP20 would be good enough flow for a non sps tank?

I've got a MP20 on a 70 gallon Oceanic Tech Tank with LPS's and it is plenty of flow...

Vertex!

The 9005 has too many mixed reviews and the magus uses an Atman pump(junk) IMO.
