Skimmer Q&A Thread

"You do?

Why?"

Because I sold it to him. LOL, Did you not get the memo?

"BTW John we had Chris measure his skimmer and take the pump out he has a Gen1 small (same as mine) with the Eheim 1250 pump(not the current pump). it is not a medium."

Again, never told Chris anything different. I think you're confusing what a customer says and what I do.

I like the choice of "we".

"I called whoever is on the other line of the itech number several months back. . And was asked to call back because they had a customer. Whoever it was, was kinda short and I felt like it could of been handled differently. like can I call you back, or can you hold for a minute or something."

If that is the way it occurred than I agree. If you can PM or email more details I will review the situation with the staff member involved.

+1 for letting MOJO use a couple ITECHS to review. I think that you benefit you both. Mojo has done excellent reviews on almost every skimmer but the Itech. Now would be the perfect time.
Plus John, you could write off the cost of the skimmer used in the review as marketing. A "WIN-WIN " situation.

+1 MOJO is a good Guy

Sorry guys but that is not going to happen. I've been approached more than once but my answer will always be no. I don't feel comfortable with the idea of paying someone to review or promote my products. I've been in business for more than 20 years and have always let my service and products speak for themselves. If people find valve in and appreciate what I'm offering they will tell others and my customer base will increase.

You do not have to pay MOJO. You send him the skimmer and he will do a review and within two months he sends it back.
Not so hard.

it was in a thread there were others who asked for the size, hence "we" would "I" have been better?

I never said you told Chris anything, just that the skimmer is not a medium, you knew that right?

LOL, thats not what was suggested by tangtang or quote by you. Either way the answer is still no. If you want a review ask those who have made a purchase.

Uh... Somebody mention me?? :)

Yeah my mistake on calling the ATB a Medium when actually its a small. Don't know why I had that stuck in my head.

I just got an I-Tech 200 from John for my new tank which is VERY close to the ATB I have.

I just started back out on the road so my tank goes unattended m-f and everything including feeding is done by autofeeder. Last weekend I came home after 5 days away to an ATB that had an overflow incedent and an I-Tech 200 cup that was full of dark skim. Got a picture of it ;) This is precisely why I like the I-Tech skimmers. Not to say it will never happen (an overflow that is because every skimmer I've ever had went nuts when I change a filter sock etc) but the I-Tech is a very consistant performer. You can see many of my close up pics I've posted of the I-Tech and see the build quality. The skimmers could take a missle strike! I'm sure ANYBODY who has one will tell you the same. I'd be curious how much the 200 body alone weighs. When I say its built like a tank I mean when you pick it up you know you have something there. Its a heavy duty unit.

I'm all about being fair as well. I like my ATB, its a nice unit, but for whatever reason I have to adjust it on a daily/every couple days to keep it at optimal skimming. This for some might be fine because they are home every night but for me its not. I'm 1000 miles away from my tank :(

GSMGuy offered to send me his Airstar to put on the ATB. I'm more than happy to give it a whirl. A very nice jesture. I think in the future I am going to try a few more experiments (maybe when I get the Airstar because to be honest I think that Eheim is not the proper pump to have on the ATB and could be most of the problem) I was thinking about taking one skimmer offline for the week to see the difference in the others production then the other for a week, switch where the ATB is sitting for the I-Tech etc.

I also was thinking about putting the Tunze pump from the I-tech 200 on the ATB for a week and see what kind of a difference this makes as well.

Lets all take a breath and relax. I know everyone is passionate about their products they trust to keep water quality high. I know I have thousands of dollars worth of coral as a lot of you do. I trust I-Tech.

I'll send ya my address GSMguy if your still interested.

Wow Lots has happened since I Went to work. Well just got home and I would like to thank all of those who have gone to bat for me. But its all good. If we could can we all relax like cwegescheide suggested. Thanks again. ANd do try to tell you all the bad as well. Kind of a heads up sort of speak. If I find something I dont like I usually start by calling the manufacture. or whoever I bought the skimmer from. Well. Did anyone have a skimmer question? :)

On the topic of skimmers questions,

My MSX has been making quite the loud almost "rattling" noise for the past 2 days. Performance dosen't seem to be hampered but I'm not positive what it is. I mean i'd assume the pump but i have already re-screwed in the "plug" or whatever you'd call the peice that allows it to be screwed into the body to make sure it was tight. Should I remove and/or clean the impeller to see if it has gunk in it or something? Also, should I be using teflon tape? Thanks in advance Mojo Guru.

So the itech 200 isnt that much less than an ATB. Both are 8 inch base and similar size. The only problem with the tunze pump , And I don't know if its a problem as much as inconvenience, is that you cant change the pinwheel. only get parts from tunze. Tunze does make nice stuff though.

Honestly I couldnt imagine the Tunze on the I-Tech 200 pullling any more air. There is a LOT of air in there and less water. I've been getting about 900L out of mine.

cw, you have the 200 with a sicce?

I just switched back to mesh from the PPW two days ago and the mesh is beating the PPW hands down. It's pulling 38-40scfh and starts on its own. JTLUK

are you running the mesh, or pinwheel. Most likely you will have to take it apart to be sure. Obviously check for any debris. But take a look at hte shaft when you have it apart. See if their are any grooves started on the ceramic shaft. I have seen skimmers run a week and get these grooves worn in. if the magnetic assembly is balanced well or a mesh job is off. Basically anything throwing the balance of the assembly off will cause the ceramic shaft to wear. When this wears the assembly can then move around and can sometimes cause this rattle sound and the magnet can also hit the motor block. So look for sign of rubbing on the magnet itself. I have replace shafts before but if it happens once it will happen again until you fix the problem. and its usually magnet, mesh, or the bushings that hold the ceramic have worn.

I hope this is helpful. Check it all out. I actually keep a carbon fiber shaft on hand as a backup for all sicce pumps ;)

Basically in simple terms. I meant its harder to get parts. and those parts are more expensive.

I have wanted to play around with one of these pumps a couple times. If I were to build a diy skimmer, the tunze is most likely what I would use. That or an askoll.

Hey Mojo - I have a kind of a newbie question regarding skimmer sizing. Let's take one of the larger BK skimmers, like the 300 Ext (which I have). If I stuck it on a 100g tank, it probably wouldn't work. My understanding of the theory that the larger neck size requires a higher density of dissolved organics to have the desired effect/performance and as a result the waste ends up just falling back in the skimmer body. So my question is: as the skimmer does it thing and removes organics, doesn't the tank essentially reach a dissolve organics level below the "activation point" that the skimmer designed for? How does the remaining waste get removed when you're running one large skimmer on a large tank? This question has led me to wonder if running two skimmers of different sizes makes sense so that as the larger skimmer reaches a less efficient state, the smaller skimmer (with smaller neck) might pick up the slack. Any thoughts? Is there something fundamental about how these venture skimmers work that I am not understanding correctly? I posted this question to the chemistry forum but they were very vague in their understanding of how the skimmers actually perform. (Too bad there's not a physics forum! :-).

Well the thought is that you get it to a low enough percentage of waste left in the water. 5% of 100g is surely different than 5% of 300g. I am only using this as an example. The larger skimmer will still work. you just wont see it collect as much as the waste will be sitting in the neck. As more people use items like vodka and bacteria to help produce low nutrient systems I think the amount of waste left in tanks is at a all time low.
Your theory on running a large and small would probably work. I can say for sure but it sounds about right.

Hey mojo, I'm about to start a 90 gallon with a 30 gallon sump/fuge. I got different people tellin me to get a vertex in-180. And others telling me to get a ASM G3. Which would you recommend or would you recommend another skimmer? Thanks

cool - thanks mojo. so let's say the BK 300 does it's thing on the first 500g. that leaves 200g of slop for the next smaller skimmer to catch. would you go with a Mini 180 or a Mini 200 to catch this extra bit?
