Skimmer Q&A Thread

mojo - your a popular guy! :o)
so if you had to choose (cus the you u said is a little too much $)
octo xtreme 200 stock for 245 shipped
octo xtreme 200 with ppw for 261 shipped
swc xtreme 200 stock for 250 shipped
??? thanks
???

Well out of those three you will want the ppw with the 8 inch body. But you may want to check out the Vertex in 180. 8 inch body and a nice gentle transition. pulls 32 scfh out of the box and is really nice and with the discounts this weekend they are about $250 ish as well.

too tall...i guess ill go with the ppw one.
so it should be enough for a 210 in the future?
swc just not comparable? thanks again for your help!

No it dont think it will be enough for a 210 in the future. I believe I said a 250a would be a better choice. The 200 with the sicce pump pulls enough air but will not cycle enough water to properly skim a 210 g setup.

gotchya. It was a little more than i wanted to spend now. The ppw should hold up fine and it wont burn up the motor or anything crazy? also, there are different heights for the swc v/s the octo? i have a bottom brace of the stand 24" above the skimmer bottom. i could move the sump over a bit to open a little more room, but not muc. i want to make sure i have space to remove the cup..thanks
mike

IS there a reason you want a recirc skimmer? or are you running it external?

No particular reason but was thinking about running external due to sump space issues.

So maybe new sump then... What would you recommend for 120 g medium to heavy stock BB sps?

Thanks

ATB 840, Warner marine AS 200, Vertex in 180 , the new super reef octo's or a CAT 1 are the ones that come to mind first.

Hi Mojo,

I'm not sure how you compare, but, how much "better", percentage wise if you can, is the ATB840 over the Vertex IN180?

Or, how much better are the cone designs over the older standard designs like the Vertex?

I'm just about to pull the trigger on the new skimmer and wanted info on this.

Thanks again,

Todd

A couple of general questions,

why does it take so long for a skimmer to break in? What is happening durring this break in period?

What is in the declorination additives that causes the skimmers to overflow?

Why does feeding kill the foam head? How long should it take to come back?

Hey guys, I have a 65g hex with a 10g sump. I don't have a lot of room in the stand. I messed up years ago and got a seaclone :sad1:. I've modded it here recently and it might be good enough for my 24g nano. Anyway, I want to make sure a get a lot better skimmer this time. I'm probably going to upgade to a 90 or 120 in the future and would like it to be able to handle that size tank. I'm lookin to spend no more than $300 hopefully. I appreciate any input you have.

Well the skimmer must be balanced. That is what makes the ATB such a great skimmer. THe amout of air and water is cycles to the body and neck size.
The ATB is more efficient using the air water mixture and uses less power. The vertex in 180 is a nice skimmer but kinda like compairing a chevy lumina to a caddillac.

The oils from the manufacturing process are wearing off and the skimmer has to build a kind of slime coat to help the skimmer bubbles rise and not break prematurely.

feeding kills the head because of the oils in the food. it changes the surface tension of the water. Same with conditioners. They cause the water to foam more than normal. Just like soap.

What would make a skimmer skim wet no matter how it is adjusted? Is it bubble size?

Typically that indicates that the skimmer is not balanced very well. I believe that it might have to much air for the given volume of the skimmer.
Perhaps Mojo will chim in on this one.

well bubble size has a little to do with it. But you should be able to lower the water level and skim dry. just be patience. depends on the pump as well and the amount of air draw and a balance to the neck air ratio

I have had all three, I would say for your setup I would go with the ATB for sure. The bk mini is really nice but a tad big for your setup and then the alpha 170 is nice but I would got with the atb then the alpha.

Mojo,
What if I threw the Supermarin 200 internal into the mix. What would you choose?

Thanks,
Ken

From my experience of owning a SM is that it was a good skimmer with a ton of air, but I found it to skim wet or light. It was a challenge for me to get it to skim dark. That said is one better than the other I don't know.
