Skimmer Q&A Thread

I have a question like that.

SRO XP5000 Internal Cone VS Reef Octopus Extreme XS350 12" In Sump

The specs says SRO is builded in acrilic, the Extreme isn't?

The cone works better than the Extreme design?

Which one produce less noise?

The repair parts are expensive or hard to find of one of them?

Which one has the better performance overall?

I'll use it in a 300 gal reef mixed, heavy loaded, both fit well in the sump.

Do you have another sugestion? my budget is $1000

Thank you for your answers

Those would both work well. The plus side of the SRO is one pump. But I would say the xs 250 would be large enough and the sicce pumps are more quiet from my experience.

^^I'd like to know about that too, I'm close to buying the SM202 that's rated 800L - 2000L And my tank will be about 800L... They seem small and maybe even cheap for what they claim to be able to handle.
i was one of the testers for the sm202, on a minimum you need a stocked 120g tank for this skimmer and i feel it will easily handle a stocked 220g system, solid built and was very quiet, if going less then a 120g system then look into a smaller model, i ran it on my heavyyyy stocked and really well fed 80g sps system and it was just too much skimmer

Anyone experienced with Bubble Magus?

I've started my new 40g setup about 2 weeks ago and the skimmer's (Bubble magus Nac3) been sitting in the sump. I started it up today and it's been putting out a ton of micro bubbles and on top of that, it's very loud! Is this typical during the break in period? And, the water level is around 7.5"-8".

Hi, I have a 40 gal breeder tank and was wondering yalls opinion on two skimmers. the first one is a Octopus 110 and the other was a SWC Venturi 110. If yall have any better ideas of protien skimmers for a 40 gal breeder please let me know.

Thanks~sc reefer

Thanks for that (: My tank would be around 210gallons, sump and all included. So would you recommend them?

Lol, No.

The 161 for example uses the es 2800pump and it does pull a good amount of air but it would be good at around 75 to 150g in my opinion.
The 201 wouldbe good from 125 to about 220gallon tanks. I am talking display tanks not just volume.

Hope that helps.

Thanks mojo!

Hey mojo I just saw on the aquacave forum there showing a preview of the new skimz leopard line.

Have you had a chance to look at that yet?

If so what do you make of the inverted cone....?

polishing neck to improve skimmer performance.

polishing neck to improve skimmer performance.

I have a ati bubble master 200 it works pretty well, but when i clean the collection cup i notice that there is a buildup of skimmate on the top edge of the neck where the skimmate goes over the edge. I was thinking that the acrylic is pretty thick on that edge, and it's flat so the skimmate has to travel across that edge before falling into the cup. I know a lot of research went into building this skimmer, but is it possible that sanding or polishing that edge to make it more of a thin sharp edge would result in better performance?

quick question, i have a Geo skimmer with a sedra 9000 on it for the needle wheel pump. the needle wheel is spinning and making a clanking sound but it isnt producing any bubbles in my skimmer chamber. any ideas on what i can do to get it working right. it was working a few days prior but i unplugged it to do some maintenance and when i went to plug it back in it wasnt working
corey

well take the pump apart. Sounds like a broken shaft or pinwheel.

a lot of skimmer have this done already but it really wont make a big difference.

Aight mojo. I am again in need of some advice. I'm planing on a med-hvy stocked 180gal tank. I've got some options. My chick has decided to buy me a skimmer for my bday. Yesss! So I've narrowed it down to 4 skimmers. 2 of the skimmers are used. Those are a BM 180ex and a gen 2 vertex in180. The other 2 are the octopus sx200 and the nwb200. The bubble magus is advertised as hanlding a much larger load than the rest, but I know that the build quality of the octopus skimmers are top notch. If I go octopus, I was thinking the nwb because it handles a larger load, although I believe the sx200 uses a better pump. The vertex is the cheapest of all 4, but it says it handles a max of 180gal. Decisions decisions... WWMD (what wold mojo do)?

Also, chicky says no more than $300. But I'm sure I can get a little more out of her :)

I am planning a 180 gallon mixed reef. I will most likely stock it a teensy bit on the heavier side. I am planning to have about a 120 gallon sump. My budget will probably be around 600 or so dollars. What skimmer would you recommend?

THe sro 2000 will be too small. You needto go to the sro 3000. that would be a great choice. the BM NAc 9 would also be good.

the sro 3000, the skimz SM 201 with the es 5000 pump. The Octo xs 250 the swc 230 with the askol pump would work well too. I would those in your budget. The ATB 1050a would be great if you can find a used one.

Thank you! I could probably spend about 800 if there is one that is really worth it in that price range.

Ok, things have changed since the last time I asked and I'm down sizing. I think I'm going to be getting a custom cad light's aquarium that will be about a 25G cube (just like the 50g artisan, but half the volume) 20-25 gallon. I'll build a small cube sump for it as well for the skimmer. I was going to replace my eshopps psk 150 on my 75G and I still want to do that but I'm going to be downsizing in the relativley near future. Do you think that a bubble magus nac 6 would be a good size to replace the e-shopps with and then use on the 25g? It would be nice to have an overkill skimmer :P If not any other suggestions are appreciated.
