Skimmer Q&A Thread

I've got a 90G medium stocked --- no sump everything is HOB with HOB refugium. CPR all in one refugium HOB with maxijet 1200 skimmer refugium combo. Right now I'm running an Aqua C Remora pro HOB and the mag drive pump is dead. I could replace the pump for 80$, or it's compatible with a rio for 36$.... Worth replacing pump or better to try a different skimmer? Will have HOB setup for awhile yet.

fyi question for a friend

Sorry for asking so many questions but my current skimmer is starting to die on me and I'm very indecisive when it comes to buying equipment.

I'm looking at either a used ATI bubblemaster 160 or a new bubble magus BM-180A. Which would be better on a med/heavy stocked 90g?

The aquamaxx HOB 1 is a great bang for your buck unit. Same aas the WM h1 really. Check it out. it will be much better than the remora.

An used deltec mce 600 would be good too...

the bm 180a would be better. The old ati bubble master 160's just didnt fair well. Performed ok. but were really thin and alot of them broke in shipping. A better option that is similar would be the octo xs 160 or the skimz SK181

Thanks, just curious the aquamaxx HOB 1 is rated for only up to 75 and the remora is rated up to 120.... Are you sure the HOB 1 would handle a 90g?

Mojo, i was directed by another member to seek your guidance. I'm in the process of my 90RR build and I'm having a skimmer conundrum. I have an old Remora Pro off my 55 with a Mag 3 that I was considering converting to a Mag 7 (with the extended collection cup) to boost performance in my tank. I was actually going to operate it as an "in sump" skimmer and see how it worked out. However, now that I have a decent sump (trigger systems CRYS30S), I was tossing around the idea of getting an in sump model. I've been doing some research and I think I found some decent skimmers, I just want some opinions on them. Also, should I just stick with my Remora Pro or upgrade?

1.) Precision Marine RL 200 Redline (found one for an awesome price but I've never seen or found any reviews on them)
2.) ASM G1X or G2
3.) Octopus NW200
4.) Euro Reef RS-200

That's what I have so far, any input will be appreciated. I am opting for higher rated skimmers simply to cover myself bioload wise and because some manufacturers over rate their systems... This tank will be built as a mixed reef. If there is something better that I have overlooked, please let me know as well. Thank you!

I honestly wouldnt consider any of those unless I had it laying around.
I would look at the JNS sk2, OCTO XS 160, atb 840, even the Bubble magus Nac 7 would be a great choice.

sedra 5000

sedra 5000

whats the diffence between a sedra pump and the so called modified sedra 5000 that is sold at reef dynamics and is it worth the extra money...thanks

Hey,

Ill be setting up a 150 gallon system, with a heavy bio-load and a bunch of NPS so feeding is going to be a lot..

I was thinking of getting the Super Reef Octopus 5000, would that be overkill or should i go for something smaller ?

Looking for a pump to replace two sicce 2500's on an ATI bubblemaster. I am willing to mod the skimmer to use one pump instead of two. I am seeing that bubble blaster or Askoll may do the tricl, but have had trouble finding accurate specs to know which exact model to use.

So the octo xs 160 rated up to 160g and the skimz SK181 rated up to 320g will both work the same on a med/heavy bioload 90g?

I have a hard time justifying the octo xs 160 because the 200 is only $30 more. But I would have to change my sump since the 200 is quite a bit bigger.

the tunze is about the best small foot print in that range. I have a wm mf 121 and it is great but just a tad large for your setup.

One question regarding the tunze. I have seen the Tunze 9010 & 9011 with and without the sump pipe kit and was wondering does it have to have it in order for it to work or can it be used without it.
What is the difference.

Anyones help would be greatly appreciated

Bubble Magus BM-180EX

Bubble Magus BM-180EX

It is going on a 120 with your standard 40 gal sump. I just have not see that much information on the BM-18EX. I am think of going with the SRO2000int, or the SK181. I think from what I have read that the NAC7 is a little below these to other skimmers. I found the BM-180EX, and want to see how it compares to all these skimmers.

He may need some info about yout system to give an informed decision on if this would be a good fit for you.

The RD sedra will come with the output adapter for the elbow, the elbow, the venturi and the pinwheel.

So if you dont have all those then you may want to get it. The asm sedra will work as well.
