Skimmer Q&A Thread

i thought it was better to have the highest gallon rating you can from a good skimmer. the sea side and octo xs 200 are only rated at 200 gallons. the sro 3000 int will work. if i was thinking wrong let me know.

What about feed pump for external app.. They recomend a 600 gph, is the water blaster HY 3000WB, rated at 750GPH to big? I've heard good things about the Water Blaster pumps.:reading:

about 2x system volume. I wouldnt overdue it. the wb pumps are nice. the 2000 would probably be better.

Not really you go too large and the neck is so big you have to maintain so much waste in your system before it will skim. To small of a skimmer and it will skim very well but not skim enough and leave waste in your system. So you try to get something right on the edge of too big and not too small.

That would be like running a SRO 5000 on a 20 gal. It would never skim anything as there would notbe enough waste to even fill the neck. By the time you would get enough waste to skim everything in your tank would be suffering.

I know that is exagerated but I hope it shows what I am talking about. Ill be off for about a week or two with knee surgery So ill try to make a video to demonstrate this point. I have a good idea to help give a visual of this.

Mojo Man: My total system capacity including sumps and Fuge will be around 400 to 450g's. Using your 2x system size maybe the 3000 isn't to big.

Whatca' think?:hmm4:

well my 135 will have these fish, im going to have a very heavy bio load. i was just thinking the bigger the better.

1 Arothron Dog Face Puffer (Arothron nigropunctatus)
1 Zebra Moray Eel (Gymnomuraena zebra)
1 Humu Picasso Triggerfish (Rhinecanthus aculeatus)
1 Red Tail Triggerfish (Xanthichthys sp.)
1 Banana Wrasse (Thalassoma lutescens)
1 Pinkface Wrasse (Thalassoma quinquevittatum)
1 Goldbar Wrasse (Thalassoma hebraicum)
1 Powder Brown Tang (Acanthurus japonicus)
1 Saddleback Butterflyfish (Chaetodon ephippium)

Hi All,
I bought a new Sicce PSK 1000 skimmer pump for my ATB 840 v1.5 and hooked it up last night. It is in 7" of water and I could not get it to stop overflowing the collection cup. Got any ideas?

Mojo...I am looking for a HOB skimmer that meets the following for my 40g breeder SPS:
1- quiet
2- design decreses or eliminates microbubbles returning to DT
3- can actually skim

Is it just me or are all of the rectangle HOB skimmers just CPR Bak Pak's on steroids? Can a rectangle chamber produce like a cylindrical?
The pump on the Eshopps PSK-100H is too loud for my taste(~69db).

I've been reading through skimmer threads for a few days and find myself totally lost. I'm restarting my 75 g reef and find that my old euroreef skimmer needs a new pump. Rather than replace that I'd rather put the money towards a new skimmer. So the current tank is about 85g total, but I plan to put together a 140-170 g total volume reef within the next year when I move. Ideally I'd like to get a skimmer that will work now, but also handle the larger tank. I know this is a big jump in size and the gap may be too big to find one that will handle both sizes, but I figured it was worth checking! So, I'd appreciate any advice on this. If not possible I'd also appreciate advise on what would work best for the current tank. I guess I'd like to stay under $500 also.

Thanks!

What do you think of the cheap ebay skimmer? The SC150? I read another thread and it seemed like a good value. If not that skimmer what is the best value for a 75g

Hi , reefers :)

I'm building a 154 g sps/acro dominated system with an 30 G sump .
And i am in the stage that i'm thinking about what skimmer to use.
I'm gonna use (like i do now) biopellets (=carbon dosing) , no refuge or LR in the sump.

I can't seem to make up my mind , and i'm left with 3 options :

option 1 :
http://www.aquareus.nl/powercone-200i-p-1578.html

the most economic one :) , but i like the adjustable pump

option 2 :
http://www.aquareus.nl/pyro-true-cone-200-p-1807.html

never heard of them before , but it seems well manufactored and doesn't take so much place in sump then option 1

option 3:
http://www.aquareus.nl/alpha-200-p-1690.html

this is the most expensive ( about 900 € or 1200 $) , but i know from experience that the pump doesn't make much noise (almost complete quit).
one thing also caught my eye on this model , the very wide neck ?? --> is this a pro or a con ?

experiences are much appreciated :)

greetingzz tntneon :)

i've got my sro 2000int. the foam r really wet. any wait to get it dry?

my tank is now just filled up with live rocks. nothing more. the bubbles can only reach the half neck otherwise it overflows.

it sits at a depth of 6.5 inches.

ill catch up tonight surgery is tomorrow. just working alot to get ready for it. Ill get you all caught up. I always do. And after that I wont have anything to do so ill be around a lot. lol.

Thanks roger

yea I made this thread so I didnt have to search through all the other ones. No biggie.

Roger, by the looks of your pump I would assume you have the octo nw 200. That is the pinwheel that comes with it and it works well. Some have that wheel and tied fish string around it the have it chop up the bubbles a bit finer. But the most popular mod on this skimmer pump is the mesh mod. If you google it you will see a good # of pics ect. But you will need some mesh enkamat. and somereally small zip ties. The thing is you really need to cut off a row of your stock pins to do this. So you should be really comfortable with what you are doing before attempting this. if you dont cut the row of pins off and the mesh it would hit the volute cover. But point in short. I would just keep it stock and let it roll.

Thanks so much for the info. The pump says octopus 3000 on it but I don't know what brand the skimmer tower is. Is there anyways to make these pumps quieter or a different pump that works well with this skimmer that is quiet?

They do seam that way. The SRO HOB is really nice and pretty quiet too. The other nice HOB is the aquamaxx h1

The first one that pops to mind is the avast CS1 cone with the psk 1000 pump. This would work on both. The sea side aquatics cs2 would do well too. But a little large for the 75. yet another option would be the JNS sk2 and the sro 2000. The thing is all these use the same pump except the sro uses the bubble blaster all will do a fine job.

Mojo~
