Skimmer Q&A Thread

What skimmer is better to put on my 75 gallon mixed reef. The Sro 1000 or avast peg leg. Either one I'm thinking of getting a head cleaner swabbie.

I will soon have a 10 bulb t5 unit for lighting and need some help with bulb combo. I've always had 6 bulb units in the past and my favorite combo was

I think for the new 10 bulb combo I still want a lot of pop, but maybe a little more white. The middle two bulbs will be the dusk/dawn so I want a good combo there. Below is my thought, let me know what you think.

Also the tank is only 24" wide so I could have an actinic bulb for color as there will be plenty of par. I've never used any actinic T5 bulbs, so not sure how they look.

I've already committed, but someone weigh in one whether or not this was the right choice. I could have had either at the same price, but I went with the SRO 5000SSS in lieu of the SRO Cone XP3000. It's on a well stocked 300 gallon display. I thought I would like the pump on the SRO5000SSS over the long haul (it has the bubble blaster 5000 instead of the 3000). Right decision?

I want to get a HOB skimmer for my 40 breeder and was wondering what everyone thinks of the SWC Mini HOT skimmer? This tank will be a SPS dominated tank. I know nothing about skimmers so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would look at the Aquamaxx HOB-1, bubble-magus nac5e hob, or octopus sro lx1000.

That should be an awesome Skimmer for that 300.

I don't have any experience with the avast but if I remember right they use the sicce600 or 1000 which is a good Skimmer pump and would do good on the 75 but I'm a really big fan of the SRO series and the bubbleblaster pumps. You can get an avast or octopus brand neck cleaner for it too. If you need a Sump saver model though I would go with the avast. The SRO1000SSS doesn't have the best design for outlet and pump placement. If you can get the SRO1000-int I would go with that model.

I started a thread with this question, but figure people reading this thread might already have an answer for me, so here goes...

I'm looking for a skimmer for my new tank build, and I've narrowed it down to a few choices: ATB 840v2, JNS SK2 and Skimz SK 201. I have about 28" of clearance in my stand and I have a Trigger Systems Ruby sump which will operate with about a 10" water level.

I know each of these skimmers are about 22" tall. I also understand that the ATB's recommended water level is 7-9", meaning I would only have to put it on a 3" stand at most, giving me roughly 3" inches of clearance when all is said and done.

However, I can't find the info on the recommended sump water height for the JNS or the Skimz. Any input would be appreciated!

If I remember correctly, mojo said that the sk2 works well also in the 7 - 9 inch range. That is the skimmer he recommended for my 120 build. Still haven't gotten around to buying it yet though

alright i figure i will jump in since i have been missing in action from here

stevedola, the sm 121 will be too small for a 90g system

bdr i run my atb 840 at 8" the jns and the skimzs require right around the same water depth

rich967 - i am not a fan of the octo line excepot for the recirc models, i really dont feel they have got the balance down yet, a vertex in100 with a sicce 1000 makes for a awesome skimmer, the skimz 181 would be a nice fit as well or several others pending space and $

crvz helped friend with his 300g sps dom tank and we went with the 5000ext and it is a beast, will take a good 2 months before it really settles in but once it does it is a monster

I had a Skimz SK-181 on my 70 gallon reef tank and loved it. I will be getting a 150 and will probably stick with the Skimz line. Would the SK-181 or SM-161 work well for a fully stocked sps system? Thanks!

Thanks for the info - maybe I can finally make a decision on one of these!

What is wrong with the SWC mini HOT skimmer? I have only been able to find good reviews on it. I have read about the Reef octopus HOB skimmers and most people have to mod them to make them work properly.

I just picked up a BM NAC5e for my 34g solana. Wondering if I should worry about any drawbacks to such a large skimmer on such a small tank (ie. No nutrients) Or if I will be ok?
