Skimmer Q&A Thread

Mojo, did you see the new Deltec skimmer that will be sub $400? It looks pretty nice, but not sure about it since it has no bubble plate.

I was going to read through this thread to see if I could find the answer to my question until I saw 101pages. Good thread.

I have a 120gl display with a 29 glsump, G2 skimmer with a 350gph pump pushing water through it. The tank has been set up and running for 5+years, although I just purchased it about 3 months ago.

Thecquestion, I dont seem to be getting much skim from the skimmer, and by much I mean there has never been any skim in the cup, although there is always a healthy coat on the riser for the cup that I clean once a week. I feed one cube of frozen daily, 1/4 sheet of algae twice a week, and pieces of squid and mysis to anemones twice a week to.

Bio load:

Blue tang
Perc clown
6 line wrasse
2 Gobies
PJ Cardinal
Some soft corals, mushrooms, frog spawn, toadstool.

I have cleaned the skimmer and the pump. It all seems to be working well. Am I getting all of the skim I should, or is it low for my tank?

Ok, Mojo!!! Need a new skimmer for a 120g dt with 40g sump, I would call it a medium load currently, but need some room to grow.

I'm looking for help in deciding on a skimmer for a 125 with a 30 sump that will start out fowlr then will progress into a reef. I have it narrowed down to one of these 2, sro2000int or the sro3000int. I'm hoping the 2000 will be enough because, the 3000's foot print could get to be a problem.

the 2000 int will be great. No worries. the bubble blaster 2000 pump is quiet the workhorse.

MAke sure you run it low enough. about 6 to 6.5 inch water depth.

have you raised the water level inside the skimmer ?

JNS sk2/aquamaxx cone2 , atb 840 v2, bk mini 160/180 gen 2,SRO 2000xp. those are all great fits for you.

Mojo,
Great on the 2000. My sump will have a water level of 10 in the skimmer section (trigger crystal). I will make sure to rise it up. Thanks for your help.

Would you pick one over another if all are within my price range?

I have always loved the bk mini skimmers. so easy to clean and work well. Second would be the ATB. Just great service from ATB. The JNS sk2 would be a great value compared to the the first two. THe sro is great skimmer too. The bubble blaster pumps are really nice. And with the subtle changes they are more quiet now too.

hope that helps.

Another 40 breeder skimmer question. I have a 40 breeder with 29 gallon sump. I'm currently using an older reef octo nw 150 no bubble plate. I moded the impeller with fishing line similar to the mesh mod. I also dose vinegar. My skimmer has a pretty stable foam head and I empty the collection cup and clean the neck around every fourth day when it gets over half full and starts to smell. The skimate is dark brown and pretty nasty. My nitrates stay a 0 and I feed pretty heavily. Should I leave well enough alone or should I buy the newer pinwheel impeller for the OTP pump or buy one of the SCA 302 skimmers?

Just could not convince myself the ATB was worth almost $200 more than the SRO xp2000int. I needed to replace one of my doser pumps, and used the saving for that and it was still much less than the ATB. Plus almost everyone here loves their SRO's and where my tank is 100% quiet is not an issue, and anything is quieter than the skimmer I am currently running.

Hey mojo I have a vertex in 180 with a bb3000. I was wondering where to settle breaking bubbles in the skimmer. I have a lightly stocked 120 but plan on slowly adding more live stock is this skimmer a little to big?

Hi Mojo,
I have shifted my choices over to either the SeaSide CS1 or 2, because of water height in the sump. If I go with the reef octo then I have to rise it up about 3 to 4 inch's which will become a problem in my stand with over all height. Now onto the choice, my tank will be a 125 with a 30 gal sump, which will start out fowlr then progress in to a med. stocked reef. Should I go with the CS1 or 2, I'm on the fence with this.

Thanks
Dan

Mojo thank you for the excellent thread.

I am upgrading to a 210 display with full plumbing into the basement with an 80g frag tank and 50g sump. So figure around 350g when all is said and done. Was looking for an external skimmer and my favorite by far is the Reef Octopus xp5000. Am I barking up the right tree?

Just ordered super reef octopus 2000 internal skimmer today for my 120 gallon with 20 gallon sump. Debated on the 2000 SSS model but I saved 140 bucks and I'm sure that it will fit in the sump.

Question, i have a euro reef sc400 i upgraded to a recirc with the parts supplied by euro reef, during the day at the peek of my light cycle the bubles ibn my skimmer get relaxed or les elastic and the foam is coarse and does not rise in the skimmer. have you any idea what causes this is it a corospondese to the bacterial cycle taking on the waste or what?

I just received and installed my new SRO xp2000int on my 120g today!!! Up and running in under 1 hr (including removing old skimmer). Already giving me some gunk. If you have not built a platform already you may need to raise the skimmer up some to get it to around 5.75 to 6 inch deapth which is what SRO recomends. Only thing I need to get is a right pvc elbow. Get a fair amount for water movement noise because the outflow ends up being about 50% covered at that depth.

i bought a reefoctopuss BH-50 skimmer for my 29 with 20g sump/fudge. i had the skimmer start on my 20g w/10g sump and moved everything in to the new bigger tank the 29g w/20g sump. in the smaller tank it was pulling nasty stuff out but for some reason it pulls stuff out of my bigger tank set up just not as fast it seems.. any thing you known about this skimmer would be great to hear

I plan on putting a piece of plastic egg crate on the bottom of the sump and I am going to use a plastic container to put the skimmer inside of that will sit in the sump with the exit side cut at 6" or slightly higher so the water will stay at the proper depth. I may have to tweak it a few times to get it exactly where I want it but that's the idea.
