Skimmer Q&A Thread

It does have a little... I guess I'd call it a slight ridge or step. Surprisingly it doesn't affect performance at all.

drae, so you think that the review on marinedepot on the em200 about needing to place water level at 8 3/4 inches to remove splashing sound was in reference to the em100??? the reason im asking is cause my sump would need to be altered if it needs to be placed any deeper than 7"

thanks for the help.

The reviews on the marine depot site are on all of the em series skimmers. Even if you choose the em200 and then press the review link it'll give you all of the em skimmer reviews. But to answer your question, on my am200 I could run it at 7". I always make my sumps with a12" skimmer level because it's always easier to raise a skimmer. I highly suggest the em200. It's really hard to beat these skimmers for the price. They just perform very well. Hth

yeah i know what you mean, unfortunually my sump has a built in baffle at around the 7" mark that would require me saw and cut out if i wanted to place deeper. here is a pic; not sure if you can see it or not.

Drae or anyone else... Please help me out!

I have a H&S A200 on my 215 gallon mostly SPS tank. I am planning an upgrade to a 300 or 400 gallon display tank. I know the H&S A200 is supposed to be rated up to 300 gallons but is it still a good skimmer. How much better are the new skimmers compaired to what I have now. If I were to buy a new skimmer for my 300 or 400, which one should I get.

For bigger tanks I like the non space saving models. Are you looking at external or internal models?

I have always preferred an external skimmer because I like the look a little better but it really doesn't matter. What are the pros and cons of an internal vs external? The stand will be 36" to 40" tall and I will have plenty of space so a non space saving model is fine.

Jns sk7 for a 400 gallon display. Aquamaxx cone 6 for a 300 gallon display. 999$ for the jns. 899$ for the Aquamaxx. I will admit that I like bubble king for external but I would just incorporate a big sump before I shelled out for the BK. Jmo

Your H&S is still as good as any other skimmer on the market, it is well balanced and the only issue would be the pumps, the impellers do tend to lose strength over time. As far as the skimmer design, it is still one of the best producing skimmers around, excellent contact time (which contrary to popular belief) is very important. You can certainly replace it if you want, but I would hang onto it if you do, you may find it works better, depending on the bio-load in the tank.

I agree about the h&s. Skimmer tech hasn't gotten any better really. .. skimmer balance is what has finally come to light. Companies are just copying the design and lph of air pull from the more balanced units.

If you're looking for a similar design to the H&S and the same pump, you can look into Reef Dynamics. The INS400E has 2 Eheim 1262 pumps on a 12" body. They have similar sized external models, but those put you in the bubbleking price range.

The skimmer actually has a single eheim 1260. I had an A200 2x1260 but I always had to pinch down the inlets to each pump or it would overflow. I still have two almost new complete spare 1260's due to the body and collection cup being damaged during shipping. Is the 300 gallon rating conservative? Is lph that important?

The rating is not something I pay a tremendous amount of attention to, it always depends on bio-load. If the skimmer is working good on your current tank, it will probably do just fine on the next tank. If you go with the 400 gallon tank and stock it heavy, the A200 may not be the best choice and a new skimmer will be in order. With the 300, it may be just right, there is no way to say definitively, but no matter what you do, put one of the spare pumps on it.

I saw on another site the 500 with the sicce. I may get that one instead. It pulls less air than skimz dc 203, but it has 10" body

The am500? I thought they had two sedra 9000's on them with a 12" body. Those skimmers pull tons of crud but the pumps run hot and draw more electricity than stated. Also the ones that came with sicce pumps had the sicce 2500 or multiple 2500's which is regarded as sicce worst pump. They pulled a lot of air but we're problematic. If you like aquamaxx go with a cone 5 if you want a 10" body skimmer. The cone 5 is am awesome skimmer and silent too. Also the em500 is available with the better pumps. Jmo
