Skimmer Q&A Thread

I have an em500 on my 330 and I like it. You have to have it in around 11" of water for it to skim the best, I like it because the pump is internal.

Ok…need opinions. I have a 125gal reef tank with a 25gal sump. The bio-load is medium but eventually I want to load it up. I'm looking at getting one of these skimmers. I need help to choose one. They both look like they do an outstanding job but just not sure which one is the better.

I actually had a reef octopus 160 on a 125 gallon tank and it worked fine for a lightly stocked tank but when i added more live stock I had to bump it up to a reef octopus 250. If I was u I would at least get the 200. I haven't had experience with a aqua maxx but the ecomaxx works well so I'm sure it's a good skimmer too.

I went for the cone 2 instead of the co-1, because you can't put a neck cleaner on the co-1, but both of the AM's seem to be pretty good skimmers. I haven't heard really anything bad about them.

Gents i did a search through this thread and through RC in general and for some reason cant find anyone that has done a replacement for APF600.... i know someone out there must have chucked that aquabee pump and put in a newer one by now?

story goes like this, got my skimmer had starting issues, but then remove impeller and its swollen cracked magnet. So rather than pay a billion dollars for a new impeller or 2 billion for a new pump lol...... Looking for an alternative pump that i can replumb?

Bubble blaster maybe?

Thanks in advance.

Mine wasn't needle wheel. I just used hose and put a barb on the end of the mag 7 and broke off the pipe on my skimmer and clamped it down.

help dead pump?

help dead pump?

posted generally in lighting filtration and other equipment then found this thread which is more suited. long story short impeller went in my in-250 skimmer. i ordered a new one and had it running for 2 or 3 days then it stopped. thats when i realised i ordered the 180 impeller... no return now since the pump moved it for a few days and it still looks new would you assume now i ruined the pump?

I have a Cadlights TIA 1350 and thinking about upgrading to the Aquamaxx ConeS-3. You think i will see a significant difference for the trouble of buying a new skimmer and reselling the Cadlights?

Guys,

I'm looking to upgrade the skimmer on my 180 reef tank. I am looking at the following skimmers but would be open to some input.

A little background.

I have a fish heavy tank and I am a heavy feeder. I keep a lot of SPS and LPS as well.

The skimmers I am considering are as follows

AquaMaxx ConeS CO-3 In-Sump Protein Skimmer

AquaMaxx Cone 3 In-Sump Protein Skimmer

AquaMaxx EcoMaxx EM300 In-Sump Protein Skimmer

All of the above would be great for a 180. I personally like the cone series but the em would be great also. I've ran both designs but not the coneS design yet.

Would that be the ConeS CO-3

or the Cone3... That you think would be better?

To be honest I cant tell the difference between those two?

They're the same skimmer but the coneS co-3 has the little cones on the bubble plate that add absolutely nothing to the performance I'd imagine. Get whatever one cost less. Same body, pump, and lph of air pull.

I've been running an Aquamaxx Cone 3 for several years and it worked great; however last week the pump stopped working. Anyone had a similar experience. Any tricks to try kickstarting it or options for replacing other than the $200 replacement on Marine Depot..ugh!
