Skimmer Q&A Thread

Hi all, I have a 220 gallon display tank that I am restarting from the ground up. I have a EuroReef RS 8-3+. I've been pretty happy with it. Want to keep a high bioload and go overboard a bit on the skimming so I'm thinking I need more than what I have.

My options are:

A) sell Euroreef and upgrade to a brand new skimmer

B) keep Euroreef and buy a second, new skimmer

I'm kinda leaning towards B b/c not sure how much I can get for the RS 8-3+ and heard it might be a good idea to have two skimmers. I have a decent footprint to cover two if I needed.

With either path, any recommendations? My ceiling is probably $700 or so on a new skimmer.

Thanks!

That will buy you a reef dynamics ins300... I suggest one skimmer vs two smaller ones.

I need a skimmer for a 100+Gallon. (Quiet and small footprint)
How about the cones co1 vrs Bubble Magus Curve 7 ?
The aquamaxx em200 is backorder for months (marine depot) and was looking for something comparable.
Is the co1 underrated?
other suggestions?

look at the seaside aquatics cs7.. it has a sicce psk600 pump. the cs6 is also a good choice...http://www.saltycritter.com/protein...ics/sea-side-aquatics-cs6-protein-skimmer.htm
Bubble magus uses lower quality pumps.

this also may prove a strong choice... http://www.saltycritter.com/coralvue/reef-octopus-nwb-150sss-space-saver-protein-skimmer.htm

I have a 100g DT, 22g frag tank, 20g refugium and a soon to be 40g sump, medium load now, hope to be SPS dominated. I have Euroreef and like it but I need to upgrade to a bigger one. I was thinking about either Ins180 or Ins180E. I had emailed to Jeff at RD and he said 180 will work well but he suggested to go higher from Ins 250 to even Ins350/350E for best result. Any thoughts on this!

I am also open to other skimmers with good quality build as ReefDynamics does. I don't like pump inside skimmer body and hopefully a slight less wattage. (At ReefDynamics, anything beyound INS180 requires 60Watts and up.) Thanks!!

That's roughly 150 gallons, I would stick with the INS180e unless you have a massive bio load.
Thanks,sirreal63! When counting water volume, do we count water in refugium and sump? Do we exclude rock and sand?

"We" may not be be accurate, but I usually do. I also count frag tanks, especially if they are being fed, which they should be. Skimmer ratings are never an exact science, and Jeff usually does a good job with his, his suggestion for a 350 is baffling, you would need a huge amount of load to even keep a good foam head with your system.

Thanks Jack! This way I can stay with the 40W pump!:bounce1:

I've been out of the hobby for several years now, and the hubby just surprised me with a new 300 gallon RR tank. It has 2 separate 30 gallon sumps that I haven't added dividers to so I'm open to suggestions on a protein skimmer. I plan to have a mixed reef with moderate to high bioload. I wanted to use one sump for a 'fuge and the other for the skimmer.

I've been doing research and to be honest, I am quite overwhelmed. One thing I learned from my last tank (a 90 gallon corner mixed reef) was don't cheap out and buy something cheap the first time around. Go ahead and get the better product because you'll end up buying both and tossing the first. (wasted A LOT of money first time around).

The only skimmer I've seen that's not unrealistically priced is the AquaMaxx Exomaxx EM500 internal skimmer. My stand is 36" tall, so I can accommodate several different varieties. I would "prefer" to keep my budget well under $1000, but if that's not feasible, go ahead and break it to me. :)

Thanks again for all of your expertise.

Hi, just a quick question. I have a RLSS R6 skimmer and have noticed lately that every time i do anything with my tank and i mean almost anything my skimmer drops down to the middle and stops foaming for probably a good few hours.I can just pull my foam block out to clean it and it will do this. And my hands dont even touch the water to do this. Is this normal to do this so much and for so long? Seems to me something is going on with it. idk?

skimmers are sensitive to surface tension, so, yeah it is normal depending. The size of skimmer/air draw vs bioload has an effect. An oversized skimmer is more sensitive to any change in surface tension and so are high air draw to water flow skimmers.

Oh... people... stop oversizing your skimmer.. it does nothing but produce erratic results vs consistency... ya don't need it.

Curious how you would suggest going about doing this? Most say manufacturer gallon ratings for skimmers are over done, so how would you know how to size your skimmer correctly to your system?

Or are you suggesting to actually follow the manufacturer recommendation?

I'm just curious as I'm looking for a new skimmer myself, and don't want to oversize.

Easy. Your not going to skim a 250 gallon tank with a 6" diameter skimmer thats only 22" tall. Lol. In other words, go by the size and lph of air/water draw. It takes a little bit of skimmer experience to learn this but it's actually pretty easy.

Ok, I get that. Is there some kind of rule of thumb or guidance regarding size of skimmer vs size of system? So one should be looking at size of skimmer body and specs of pump?

The best way to size a skimmer is to state your size of the DT and then ask people what they use on that size tank and start to research there. Try to set a realistic budget, look for a used one if you can.

Bayour is selling a 36'' Lifereef skimmer for a great price if it works on your tank I would snatch that up.
