Skimmer Question

Good morning!

I have a 55 gallon fish only tank that I have been using a bio-wheel filter on. I just got an Aqua C Remora Pro skimmer and I plan to set it up this evening. Do I still need the bio-wheel?

My tank has 50 pounds of live rock and 20 pounds of base rock.

you only need live rock flow and a skimmer as a basic set up, but if removing the filter do it slowly as not to crash the system.you dont need to remove the filter but theres no harm in doing so if done gradually

I have two power heads in the tank as well. One in each of the back corners directing water tot he front of the tank.

You could leave the filter on for some mechanical filtration & also use it to run carbon which will help with your water clarity.

It's a bit of an eyesore, but I'm used to it.

I had wondered if it would be overkill to have both it and the skimmer.

When you say mechanical filtration, does that mean continuing to run it with the bio wheel part on?

I can be wrong, but from what I know is if you are doing corals no filter just rock and skimming, filter will give you nutrients, protein, organics the skimmer takes it all out so why put in then take out
