Hi all!
Long time reader, first time poster here.
I've got on Aqueon Model 2 sump and have put my Coralife Super Skimmer on terminal notice due to its "improved" cup collection design, which absolutely sucks.
I need to find a replacement that meets several conditions:
1. It has to work well, obviously.
2. It has to have a small footprint. This is not a large sump, and the small print was what led me to the SS in the first place. There's a Tunze return pump as well as a mag pump driving a chiller in there already, and there just wasn't room for a large, high-quality skimmer.
3. We live in a loft space that is one giant room. Our bed is about 20 feet away from the sump. So whatever the replacement skimmer is needs to not sound like a jet engine or a massive waterfall.
I've been looking around at possible replacements and have been intrigued by the Aqua C Urchin. It seems small enough footprint-wise, but I've heard its pretty noisy. Can anyone confirm/deny? I know there are DIY plans for quieting its sister skimmer the Remora but I don't know if they'd work on the sump model.
I'd love to hear what any owners think about this skimmer, or recommendations on other skimmers with similarly small footprints.
Also, I've considered putting two nanoskimmers in there instead, but am not sure if having two skimmers is a good or bad idea.
The whole system is pretty small. 35 gallon hex reef tank (why everything has to be in the sump), and the sump is 17 gallons with a fuge so the return skimmer area is quite small (10" x 10"). I don't need a monster skimmer for a system this size, but I do like to use equipment sized up from the minimum. (I don't like things rated for "20-50 gallons" on a 50 gallon system. Much rather be in the "50-100" rating on a system my size, since it helps things stay more stable on a smaller tank.)
Thanks for any help/input!
