Skimmer recommendations for a cramped sump

Hi all!

Long time reader, first time poster here. ;)

I've got on Aqueon Model 2 sump and have put my Coralife Super Skimmer on terminal notice due to its "improved" cup collection design, which absolutely sucks.

I need to find a replacement that meets several conditions:

1. It has to work well, obviously.

2. It has to have a small footprint. This is not a large sump, and the small print was what led me to the SS in the first place. There's a Tunze return pump as well as a mag pump driving a chiller in there already, and there just wasn't room for a large, high-quality skimmer.

3. We live in a loft space that is one giant room. Our bed is about 20 feet away from the sump. So whatever the replacement skimmer is needs to not sound like a jet engine or a massive waterfall.

I've been looking around at possible replacements and have been intrigued by the Aqua C Urchin. It seems small enough footprint-wise, but I've heard its pretty noisy. Can anyone confirm/deny? I know there are DIY plans for quieting its sister skimmer the Remora but I don't know if they'd work on the sump model.

I'd love to hear what any owners think about this skimmer, or recommendations on other skimmers with similarly small footprints.

Also, I've considered putting two nanoskimmers in there instead, but am not sure if having two skimmers is a good or bad idea.

The whole system is pretty small. 35 gallon hex reef tank (why everything has to be in the sump), and the sump is 17 gallons with a fuge so the return skimmer area is quite small (10" x 10"). I don't need a monster skimmer for a system this size, but I do like to use equipment sized up from the minimum. (I don't like things rated for "20-50 gallons" on a 50 gallon system. Much rather be in the "50-100" rating on a system my size, since it helps things stay more stable on a smaller tank.)

Thanks for any help/input!

SWC120 or Bubble Magus equiv or SC? equiv. These are all small size cone skimmers with the pump inside the base of the cone so that they take up very little space.

Also the Reef Octo SRO cones as well.

I liked and used Eshopps skimmers, and they have a small foot print. I would recommend the PSK-75, which has a footprint of 9"x4", or the PSK-100 for future growth with a footprint of 10"x5".

There is also a Bubble Magus clone on Ebay, and there is a thread about them big brother and the SC 65, which is what I would also recommend. You can read about them HERE. The SC 65 can be bought on Ebay HERE

Both the SC skimmers and Eshopps use the same brand of pump, Atman. I like the Eshopps better due to the full body design.

Here is my PSK-100 on an 80g -

This is all really helpful, folks. Thanks so much. I'm out of town right now but will be back tomorrow and am going to measure my sump to see if I can jiggle some things around and get a couple more inches of room in there for one of these. They all seem much better than Mr Crapola skimmer that's in there now. :)

Ended up going with the SC65. For that price you almost can't go wrong. :) Just finishing its break-in now - I'll update the thread with a gunk comparison vis-a-vis the old skimmer in a few days, but seems like a great upgrade so far.

Thanks for all the help!

Reef octopus cone sss1000. Awesome skimmer, awesome pump, small footprint. And quiet.

The aqua c is loud, it sprays out of a jet nozzle.
