Skimz skimmer club

I have sm 201 its sitting in 8 inches of water . Close the air intake and then open in 3/4 turn... open the gate to about half and let it settle.. once its settled you want to get the level in the middle of the neck just under the collection cup .

Slowly close the gate turning it clockwise to raise the water level do it tiny amount at a time.. to lower the water level turn it counter clock wise..

once it starts foaming keep closing the gate until the foam reaches about 1/2 way up into the collection cup. Fine tune by closing the and opening the air valve ... This is how i do mine rather its the right way or not i just know it produced very well.

my gate valve is like 1/5th open and air valve maybe 1/2 turn.. i have to drain the collection cup 2 times a week and clean it every other week

Thanks for your advice. Will follow those steps. Do you throttle down the DC pump at all? What speed/level do you have it running on?

Mine is not a DC pump its the eden 5000 needle wheel..

but i would assume if you set the gate valve half way and the air ro 3/4 turn open . then throttle the pump to put the bubbles in the neck area..

I Have read (i think in this thread way back) that most run there dc pump around mid level. If your not getting enough foam during break in raise the pump and open the gate to compensate..... i assume the faster you run the pump there more air bubbles you get..

question for you just because i am now curious.
when you run the pump wide open

Do you get more tiny air bubbles or larger ones ?

"FIRE IN THE HOLE"!!! :)

Skimz Monster 163 in the sump and a rollin'.

To answer your question with the pump wide open you def get more tiny bubbles. I started running the pump at 10 and tried to work the air valve and after a handful of times trying to dial it in I quickly learned less is more. (in regards to pump speed)

Much easier and greater success dialing in with the pump running between 4-6...Nice big bubbles and more accurate dial I found.

Anyhow, no where near perfect, but after an hour with it I'm happy for tonight.

Pump had a slight buzz and I could definitely hear it when running at max, or 10. I have it on 6 now and can't tell it's on as far as sound goes even with the door open.

I was hoping this was silent, and it sounds good thus far.

thanks again for your advice.

Sm251 still cranking hard.. I think it's been a year..

Glad you have it working right now... I can see the benefit of the dc pump on having more adjustment . When i bought mine people were having issues with the DC Pumps so i decided to not get one .. I almost got got a skimz brand but so far i do not regret it .

Do you recommend the Kone over the Monster series for performance or is that only if you are tight on space?

Probably too late now, but I forgot to mention that the SK222 Kone completely disassembles whereas the the SM202 Monster does not. Basically, you can take the cone off the body on the SK222 but you can't take the tube off the body on the SM202.

Complete disassembly is important to me.

Bubble King Mini 180 + new filter sock = days of overflowing.

I changed a sock Saturday and the skimmer hasn't stopped overflowing. Im about to light it on fire..

Hey guys. I've decided to upgrade my skimmer from an SRO 1000int. Just not sure of which monster to go with.

I have about 150gallons of total water volume. moderate bioload. No upgrade in the near future on tank but bioload will increase. SPS only.

Looking between sm163, sm201, and sm203.

What would you guys recommend?

I am not sure about the sm163 but i think it would be right at your min ..

the only difference in sm 201 and 203 is the pump. 201 has a eden 5000 electric pump (what i have ) and the 203 has a jeboa DC PUMP...

I Do not think either is better then the other. but i do know with the dc pump you have more to deal with to get it adjusted just right.. There are tips above as we had a discussion about this recently..

So if I understand correctly, I'd outgrow the 163 potentially?

I think I like the idea of the D.C. Pump. So, if you're saying that what I posted above, I'll probably go 203.

I have the SM163. Running it on a 112G tank...
The DC motor is great imo, much easier to dial in.

for the SM163 as per Skimz...
Rated for tanks up 317 gallons (1200 Liters)

BRS Recommended for tanks up to:

Heavy Bioload (Most Common) - 120 gallons
Medium Bioload - 150 gallons
Light Bioload - 200 gallons

Yea, I saw this on BRS. It sketches me out a little simply because I have a tendency to overfeed and really don't want to end up buying another skimmer in a year.

If that's the case definitely get the bigger model and you always have the ability to throttle with the DC to get it where you need it.

I would call BRS and ask them..
I know if you oversize a skimmer to much it will not perform efficiently . Tell them you want the biggest that will Still work with your current situation.. Who knows you might want to add a frag tank or refugium to your system down the road and the bigger skimmer would help..

Myself i think it will be ok and if you want dc pump the for sure get the 203 .

other people will prob post as well and give you other opinions ..

I really cant say for 100%
MY 201 Is on a system with the following

Display tank is 240 plus mixed reef mostly softies and 14 fish 4 of witch are 4 inch plus tangs .
Refugium that is 75 gallons of water
Coral tank that is 40 gallon long

My sump is a 75 gallon tank that has about 30 gallons in it.
I RUN THE Skimmer gate 1/3 open and air adjustment about 1/4th of its adjustment range...

I just called and spoke to them. They recommended the 163 but even that was just simply from pulling up their own site and re-reading the tank recommendations. 203 is recommended at heavy bioload up to 190 gallons.

I figure I'm at approx 145-150 now. Maybe a 10 gallon increase if I upgrade my sump to a sumpro 30-34.

I feel like I'm still splitting it.

I went back to there site just now ..
you are just below what they claim for the 203 ... But for the 163 if you push your bio load its not enough..

if it were me i would do the 201 or 203 they are the same with exception of pump and give you more room to grow.. BRS to me rates them lower then they are capable of.

MY Opinion, I was wrong once. but that was me being wrong about being wrong.:fish1:

I had to return a skimmer because of when they first began their ratings system on the skimz.. That's how I ended up with the 251. And it has performed magnificently, continuously!

I would definitely do the 201 or 203, simply because, like you said, who wants to double spend.. And your skimmer size isn't going to be that big, to where they supposedly don't perform well( I personally don't put too much faith or stock in that theory, because you have the other camp with the only 30% organics that can be pulled.. Everyone has an opinion)..

But that's just me.. And, your doing sps.. That, in and of itself, you want to be able to pull if you really need to..
