Slakker's Oceanic 58g

He's still alive, but still doesn't seem to want to leave the corner. I have kept it quite dark for him though, so I'm hoping that he's resting after a stressful day and will start being more active later in the day.

I haven't tried to feed him at all yet. I was thinking, for no particular reason, that I should hold off on that until he's been with me for a full 24 hours.

Congrats!

The tank build looks awesome.

Seeing your tank and enthusiasm may be all I need to not tear down my 58g although it needs a ton of work at the moment.

So when are you planning on skinning the stand?

Cool stuff Slakker.

Did you see the angel eating at the LFS??
I'm not sure what harm it would do to try and feed him the first day.

Also, did you figure out how the salinity in your QT dropped overnight? Do you have an ATO on it or something???

What was the fallout from all the flooding in your town by the way?? Everything back to normal now or is it taking a while?

The river is still quite high, and we keep getting little bits of rain here and there so it hasn't been going down much, if at all. Lots of people are out of there homes, there's been quite a bit of damage, but as far as I know it's kind of a "We'll know more when we can actually see it." situation.

I saw the angel eat several times at the LFS on several different days, and everyone who I talked to that worked there had said he was hitting the food like a champ, eating everything from formula 2 to cyclopeeze.

There is no topoff on the QT, and the only thing I can think of is that the water was substantially colder the night before...I probably should have checked it BEFORE I started acclimating the angel, but I had no reason to think that it would have changed at all.

The angel is staying over in his little corner and hasn't been moving around much at all. His breathing seems normal and he doesn't appear to terribly stressed. From what I can tell there are no signs of disease, but it's a little hard to see him back there with indirect lighting and black paper on the sides of the tank.

I'm going to go ahead and try to feed him a little bit of Nori and see if he is interested in it at all. If not, I may have to run to the LFS tomorrow to pick up some frozen formula 2 and maybe something with a lot of spirulina in it.

Edit: Awesome, he's venturing out a little bit more right now, but staying pretty low and against that back wall of the tank. I think he might just be slow to explore.

Eileen,
I'm not exactly sure when it'll get done...my father is the keeper of the tools and he's been pretty busy helping my brother get settled in to his new house, so it's kind of an availability thing at this point.

Let a small strip of nori in the tank for over an hour and I don't think he touched it once. He is swimming around a lot more now though, i'm watching him pack at the bottom of the tank right now. He seems to be getting more brave and a lot more active now.

Hopefully these are all good signs, but I'd feel better if I saw him eat.

Maybe he'd like more flow? I have a spare MJ900 I could put in there for him, I don't think the 10-20 AquaTech wal-mart special filter really moves a lot of water...

Cherub is still alive from what I can tell...I'd forgotten how much seeing marine fish sleep freaked me out. When we had freshwater tanks, everything was pretty much always moving. With my clownfish every so often one or both will just lay on a patch of rock that they apparently deem to be particularly comfortable.

The cherub has apparently made his bed on the silicone bead at the bottom of the tank.

I ran some Ammonia and Nitrite tests on the 58 this evening and they both tested at...zero?! It's only been 16 days since I put the rock in the tank...is it possible that it cycle that quickly? Over half of the rock was "cured" fiji from DFS, so dieoff on that was probably pretty minimal, and I have been skimming pretty heavily...

I think I'll either be buying some new test kits (using >1yr old Tetra kits) or taking a sample in to one of the stores nearest me tomorrow just to double check.

Yep, it's still doing well (from what I can tell.) It's starting to get a little more adventurous, though it seems he doesn't like me watching too closely.

Glad to hear the Cherub is doing better.

As to your water tests... yes, buy new ones just in case, but I've seen Ammonia and Nitrite test at zero in days if the rock is fresh enough... nitrates can spike quickly though (since there are large amounts of preexisting bacteria on the rock, ammonia is quickly processed through nitrites into nitrates)

On my current system I used all 70 lbs. "fully cured" rock and 20 lbs live sand and though I had some die off, by day 5 the ammonia was at zero, nitrites at 0.25 and nitrates at 20... on day 6 nitrites dropped to zero as well... I'm doing minimal water changes to keep the nitrates in check at around 20 while the DSB gets established (hoping to establish a good crop of de-nitrification bacteria as well)...

I think skimming is part of the key, keeping extra nutrients out of the water column helps... I've got snails, Anthelia and star polyps that hitchhiked in all doing well, so I'd say it was worth the extra for the cured rock IMO

keep us updated, and get some more pics :D

He eats!

He eats!

:D

I picked up some other foods at the LFS today, specifically some cyclopeeze and spirulina enriched brine/mysid...and guess what?! He's a PIG. He's been chowing down for a couple minutes now.

He's getting a lot more comfortable in the QT, has started venturing towards the front of the tank a bit, as well as swimming in and out of a few of the PVC elbows. He still seems to favor that back corner, but seems to be quite healthy, and doesn't seem to be at all disappointed to be out of the LFS's little cube.

I can't wait to see what he does in the 58 :D

Oh WOW! I cannot believe how much his activity has increased just from one feeding! He's a lot more active, exploring (as much as is possible in a 10g...) all over the tank and swimming around a lot more.

I think tomorrow will be time for pictures!!!

He'll be getting at least a 4 week quarantine, assuming he stays healthy and doesn't get sick on me.

Pictures!!!

Pictures!!!

I know! He's so much fun to watch, he's so active. I feel bad having it in the 10g for so long, even with how small he is every inch of this tank is used up now that he's eating again.
I may have to bury one of these PVC pipes in my rocks somehow...it's so cute how he sleeps in there.

I like to keep my fish nameless until I've gotten them through QT...I guess I think if I name 'em too soon I'll end up killing them somehow.
