Slakker's Oceanic 58g

Looks like my little fan pointed at the water in the canopy has dropped my temp from 86 down to 82...though my evaporation is a little crazy now.

Did a water change today, which included moving over another small rock and a few cups full of sand from the nano to the fuge. I also decided that I actually wanted to see what was going on in the fuge so I scraped the glass down there and it actually looks almost good.

Things are a bit cloudy from the new sand, but here's a pic of how things are looking:

In this picture you get a good idea of how different the wood looks between the sealed stand and the raw canopy (The front panel is hanging a little crooked...I've been meaning to fix that...lol:

Here's a picture of how I have the little fan set up (yes, it helps a bit just having it pointed down at the water like this):

And a picture of the top of the canopy. It was a great idea, but just not quite enough to keep the temps down with the way things are sealed in down below. I'll be cutting a(nother) hole out of the back panel of the stand and mounting a fan blowing air out to try to keep humidity controlled down there.

The top of my canopy has two 1 foot square holes I cover with egg crate. I have my fan mounted to the eggcrate and blowing up, works very well at keeping temps down. Even with the 150w HQI on the 30g tank, temps is still low 70's 10 months a year.

Got a few good pics of the green/purple rim cap...I'm about to head back in there and try to get some decent shots of the green/brown polyps and the grape. They're in trickier spots and I keep missing the focus.

Nice work on the tank so far, I really like it. I've been following your thread for a short time now because I'm putting together my own setup very similar to yours.

I have a question about your sump setup. I am also using a 20g tall sump. My question relates to the T coming off your return and back to the fuge. What is the purpose of this? Is it to regulate flow into the refuge section?

Originally the T had been a bleed line for the return pump, so that I could divert some flow into the refugium if it was too much for my overflow to handle. At some point in some thread somewhere I was told by a few different people that it was actually easier on the pump and more efficient if I just used the ball valve on the return line to regulate the flow, so I've been doing that ever since and haven't noticed an issue.

Thanks for the kind words :D Be sure to post up a link if you decide to do a build thread for yours!

EW. Took these about 3 minutes ago. It looks like cyano, acts like cyano, but instead of red, it's so dark green it looks black.

It IS Cyano... can be green, red, blue or black from what I've read... I've got a tiny little patch that matches yours pretty close in color that started once I switched to NeoZeo method of carbon/bacteria dosing... gonna keep an eye on it and see what happens over the next few weeks

GL and hope yours goes away fast!!

Santa was good to my tank this year :D

Along with some stuff for my cat (including a long overdue rug for the litter box) I got a pretty good haul of reef junk. Some things I had asked for, a few I wasn't expecting. Among the haul was a TLF Phosban reactor (silly me forgot to ask for the media), a second Lunar Link, and a Ranco single stage temp controller.
My dad has also offered to help me build and wire up a power station for the tank that I can mount all of my strips and whatnot into so that the cats will have a harder time romping on the switches and turning things off...plus with the rat's nest of wires cluttered together next to my tank I'm sure it's a fire hazard.

I'm particularly impressed with the Phosban reactor...I'd never seen one close up before, and the build quality is absolutely amazing. That, and it's a really simple design, doesn't seem like there's much that could possibly go wrong.

I'll get some pictures up tomorrow after I've had a chance to run to the hardware store and pick up a few things that I need to get everything installed...I'm also going to be checking out a better way to elevate my skimmer, the eggcrate is starting to crack and the skimmer is no longer sitting quite level, and I think that may have something to do with why it's never really started skimming all that well.
