what would be a good slr camera to get for someone just starting out using one.The lens would be for 100yds and closer kids are into sports and the point and shoot isn't working to well

My wife used to swear by nikons. They're nice and she still uses one as a backup. As she got more serious about it she found that most pros use canon. When she'd take classes and get tips, they weren't as familiar with nikon features as they were with canon.

Once you decide on a model, look online for a combo that includes a really versatile lens. We got something like a 24-135. That's decent for close and medium range.

I picked up a Nikon D3100. It has what I am looking for. Though the Canon Rebel T2i is fantastic as well. You could argue both sides but regardless what starter SLR you get, you will love the photo quality against any regular point and shoot.

The differences between Nikon and Canon are subtle it really comes down to what feels best in your hands. As for lens recommendations it boils down to how much you want to spend. I have a Sigma 70-300mm that I use on my Nikon D60 that works well. On that note, look for a dslr that has the lens motor in the camera body vs in the lens itself, it keeps the cost of the lens' down a little. There are a coupke of good stickys in thephotography board and a lot of good advice.

Just bought a Canon T3I with a standard kit lens 18-55 and I love it. Knowing that would not be enough zoom I also bought a 55-250 IS lens to go with it fast focus and nice clear pictures even zoomed all the way out. My father in-law has the T2I with the standard kit lens and I have used it in the past thinking I was getting one just like it. After talking with the camera salesman and he pointed out the new functions I went with the T3I. Man it takes really nice video to. Oh and I would suggest no less than a 16 Gig class 10 memory card especially if you think you might do some movies or shooting in raw mode. I bought a 32 Gig and it will take 500 some pictures in raw mode which is a lot I know but I mainly I bought it for movies which it will do 45 minutes at 1080I. Happy camera hunting.

If I had the chance to start over I think I would go with Canon. I have a Nikon D90, and while I do love the body I have heard that lenses for Canon's tend to be a little cheaper and more abundant.

That's what my wife has been saying recently. We're picking up our next slr in june-july and it looks like the canon eos 6d with the the portrait lens is what we'll be picking up

Both cameras are great, both are excellent lens manafacturers. Nikon has been around longer. Canon was able to get into the sports market in the early 90s by Dropping support of their previous lenses and redesigning their AF system. Nikon opted to continue supporting their old lenses and as a result didn't have the AF that canon did.

These days both are equal in AF. Personally I dislike how canon will fire the flash in low light to focus. The fit and feel for me personally on the nikon is better. In no way does that mean the camera is better, I think it just feels better.

While shopping turn the zoom on the included kit lens for canon and then nikon back to back and tell us if you notice a difference.

With that said the L lenses from canon are amazing!

Gary- It's something you should look into for sure. It really is leaps and bounds ahead of point and shoot and I know for a FACT that you would take a lot of joy out of it.

I know...

I know...

simply because I used to own an "old time" SLR.

Digital p&s is all I can afford at this time.
Besides.... I've convinced myself it's all I need for now :)

I really like my Canon T2i, I actually upgraded from my original XT. I'd vote for Canons personally...really you can't go wrong with a Canon or a Nikon at this point. The real expense can be the lenses... You always want one you don't have. Usuallythe base lens they offer in the kit is good for portrait type photos or indoor stuff, but doesn't have much of a long distance zoom. You can always start out with the kit lens and as you better determine your real needs get a better zoom lens. I've only got the 18-55mm IS kit lens but have a zoom 75-300 that I can borrow and I really like that versatility. I've been really wanting to get an all in one Tamron 18-270mm, I t would really be the only lens I would need... But it's like $450 used.... I'll keep it on my wish list.
I'd second the idea of going to like BestBuy and picking up a couple and see which "feels" better and then kinda let your budget decide which model.

This is the Camera i am selling..

Nikon D3000 camera body with a AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G lens the memory card is a PNY Optima 8gb chip..It has the Nikon battery The other lens is a Tamron AF70-300mm F/4-5.6 DI LD Macro 1:2

The Nikon D3000 is not the best one out there, but hardly used and for 400 bucks cant beat that..I was never good using that thing lol

heres the thing....

I have some experience for a few years in DSLR cameras. It doesnt REALLY matter what you buy. Buy last years model. That really doesnt matter, what matters is the LENS! i spent almost as much as a camera on a lens and it really matters. The lens is amazing, and can make most models an amazing camera.

I personally shoot with a DSLR Canon t1i. and usually shoot with a canon 100mm f2.8 lens. Just my experience. good luck with your new camera. I highly suggest new egg dot com. no tax and free shipping or abes of maine dot com

Some examples of my pics with my camera, by no means a expert. get a tripod too!
