i bought a load of coral skeletons, I soaked them in RO water, and tested for copper jic...the only kit i had was an api.... i dont get on well with api kits because my colour vision isnt great, i think it was somewhere between a 0 and 0.25ppm and after talking to randy holmes farlety i think i wont try and use it... although i am tempted to do a vinegar bath and clear the pores, soak in rodi and retest... what do people think???

arent you glad I didnt rope you into helping me carry this one this time :)

Yea, I think that is aimed at me. Ofcourse you know I would have no problem returning the big favor you did for me.

Just keep soaking the rock and do weekly water changes and you should be ok. Also keep in mind I will be ordering a couple hundred pounds of rock soon. You can get first grab of it when it gets in.

Looking Good Buddy

As cool as those skeletons are, I unfortunately wouldn't use them.

IME coral skeletons can "soak up" crap like no other (more-so than your average piece of LR), and it could continue to leach back into your system for an undetermined amount of time.

I'd hate for you to have fresh coral skeletons due to the use of old coral skeletons... if ya catch my drift ;)

I honestly have no idea if a Vinegar bath would do the trick, but I suppose it can't hurt? After, test for Cu in RO/DI water again and see what happens... do you know why they'd have copper in them in the first place? Where these used in a FOWLR that ran copper (perhaps from a LFS)?

thanks guys...im assuming they were in a FO... the guy i got them from was involved in an aquarium buisness back when they did 'swim tanks' the old undergravel filtered ones... he thought they hadnt had copper on, i think they are about 18 years old, which is why i wondered about the copper being used to treat the fish in them

you're right, to end up with a load of skeletons would be more hassle than its worthy :)

chewy, a couple of hundred pounds or rock??? for work or pleasure?

Well my friend you are one of the few that knows what is in the "work"s and it is pleasureable. I will let you know when the order is placed. Ofcourse if you are in need sooner ... let me know. No time like the present. :bum:

haha, no worries mate...im good with the amount of rock i have just need some live stuff for a bit of fauna although im paranoid about vermetids as I detest them

thanks Q

have a little dilemma, how i'll waterproof insidfe the stand... i had spoken to kyle from saphire about an acrylic tray but the only way i could do it would be to get it in in three pieces and weldon it in there... kyle says that the weight of the sump would mean that the seems wouldnt be reliable and it would eventually fail...

anyone got any good ideas?
thanks

Just line it with a couple of layers of heavy duty plasting sheeting like the kind they sell at HD for painters to put down on the floor. Its basically a little thicker consistency than heavy duty garbage bags and works great. Since your stand is wood its easy to just staple or glue in place. I've used this method on several stands and it works well. Not as pretty, but perfectly functional.

sly fox,
I don't know if you need the tray to hold alot of water or not. I used a dog plastic crate tray under my son sump. Nice tank BTW.

thanks guys... well i like things tidy, well the wife does haha which is why i had to get rid of my old pacific coast chiller and get a teco, so i think i wouldnt get away with sheeting

a tray for the sump might not be a bad idea... I had asked kyle at saphire aquatics about a three part tray that could be weldoned in the stand once I moved it in but he felt that the weight of the sump would eventually make the bonds fail...

ive never used wet fibreglass...i might look into that

ok, so ive spent a while playing with rock...

so after having the dog jump on it, i eventually got it in the tank this weekend... i attached three pieces to acrylic to stand on their ends
