Small hole in Sarcophyton elegans

I had a Sarcophyton elegans for nearly two years. Then it started to slump and fell off of its mount and died. I now have another nice, small figi which I am acclimating to my show tank. This morning I thought I noticed a small cut, or hole, near one edge of the capitulum. Is there anything I can do to help this heal, or will it just rot away? Does anyone recommend cutting this piece out as you would a frag? The cut or hole is very near one edge of the coral, about an eighth of an inch long, and very narrow.

can you post a picture of the hole?

based upon the previous experience i would suggest inspecting the area. cutting into the area to open it up for inspection if necessary (outside of the tank and in a separate container, if possible).

could be a parasite/coralivore or just a hitchhiker trying to make a home. either way i would toss the offending creature out once you remove it.

could be an illness/infection. i'd clean the wound (same goes for above), rinse, and treat with lugol's. hth
