It looks like I was wrong on the ID of the likely parents of the snails. This is my best guess of species:

Looks like a Collumbellid. So, in the same super-family as Nassarius, but these are herbivores.

In hindsight, if the ridiculous name didn't tip you off (I breezed right over it), that they are sociable and dine on Gem Tang eggs would be other clues.

The "boiler plate" about not buying them and allowing scientists to study them first was the icing on the plausibility cake for me. Plus the rubbish about their being found at 30' plus helped "explain" why lots of breath hold collectors hadn't found them yet.

Film is great! I would shoot it a lot more if I didn't have to pay for it. When college is over I will probably invest in a nice EOS film setup.
