Snail shells?? What to do with them?

I work for an LFS that has literally 1000's and 1000's of empty turbo snail shells in their live rock vats. I plan on taking out all of the shells in the next few weeks. What can these be used for? Will they dissolve in a calcium reactor since they are calcium based?? Or should i just throw them away?? I would like to recycle them some how. Any thoughts?? Any body want to buy them?? P.M. me.

i am under the imperssion that they are not the best idea for the reactor. i worked at a lfs and took the shells you speak of and tossed them into my fuge..soon i had rotifers and all kinds of things growing..... just be sure you don't have any bad cooties in the system

Way off topic...

But, I am guessing that "351winsor" refers to the infamous 351 Cubic Inch V8 produced by Ford Motor company at the "Windsor Ontario" plant. If you ask a mod kindly, they can change the spelling of your screen name for you :)

Then again if you like "winsor" instead of "windsor" then you are good to go.

toss it in your fuge they are perfect for pod mysids reproducing. depend on how many u have id like to buy a couple lbs. lmk thanks

So Bean's a motorhead!

I have been know to build a few motors over the years. Back in early 90's my roommate had a sub 10 second street legal Camaro with a 50 pound bottle of juice... The 3800 stall made it kind of hard to leave a stoplight or stopsign straight. Did I mention the 600+ HP Jeep CJs?

They can be used in calcium reactors. My understanding is that they produce a higher level of phosphate than proper media though. I'm not sure how much higher.

I used mine for frag plugs.

You glued frags to a 351 Windsor?? Man some people will glue frags to anything:D

I guess you have plenty of GFO growing on that block by now and dont have to worry about phosphate either...

Package them fistful in a ziplock and sell them to hermit crab folk at a dollar a swat.

Huh, I had a Cleveland in a 73 Cougar and my friend had a 69 (or 68) with a Windsor, but I thought that was in CA. Didn't know it was Ontario.

Selling them relatively cheaply as replacement shells for hermit crabs, or as rubble for critters like jawfish which need to reinforce burrows, is a reasonable way to help recoup the costs of the snails a bit. Maybe give that a go.

The shells are also great to add to the cement when you're making DIY rock. It helps to keep it light and adds lots of voids for bacteria to grow.
