Snorvich Ich Sticky Question

I see that on the sticky it says the only 3 100% effective treatments for ich are copper, hypo, TT....I see many people use chlorq. phosphate, so does this not work or am I mistaken?

While CP was popular quite a few years ago it's resurgence has just happened over the last couple of years. I suspect the stickie was written within the last 5 years. A lot of people have had success with CP treating ich.

Thanks. I finally got my permanant QT setup today. It's funny that my QT is bigger than my DT but its all I had, lol.

There are issues with CP which from my perspective make it not a 100% solution. First there is no way to measure/test concentration within a system, secondly duration of treatment is not well defined, thirdly what it "kills" (parasite and reef critters) and the stage of the parasite it effects is ambiguous, and finally there are circumstances where it has anecdotally not been effective (but those are not rigorously defined). If it works for you, terrific. It is just not a solution that I personally support.

Yes, I was asked to write the stickies within the last five years for tank transfer, cryptocaryon irritans, and Amyloodinium ocellatum. A couple of the stickies were written to expand upon the information in the original stickies due to a lot of questions on them.

Ok, then how low sg for hypo and how long is the treatment? I don't want to use Cu, my reasoning is a small child that likes to explore so while I keep things up something like Cu around the house seems dangerous to me.

Never mind I see that it's in the stickie....thanks

However, it is important to monitor it constantly with a calibrated refractometer since rising above the target will reset the clock. Also note that hypo ONLY works with cryptocaryon irritans.

Thanks. Ya I plan to do Prazipro first and then hypo2-3 weeks after.

What is the danger level on the low end ? I should be able to keep it 8-10 ppt

Before you get too excited about hypo, read this from the article below:

More recently, studies have demonstrated different salinity tolerances among strains of Cryptocaryon. Yambot (2003) described one Taiwanese outbreak occurring in sea bream Sparus sarba at a salinity of 5 g/L, and another outbreak in sea perch Lates calcarifer occurring at a salinity of 10 g/L. These two strains were successfully propagated in the laboratory at 7 and 10 g/L, respectively, and are well below previously documented preferred salinities.

1.008/.009 but be aware that there are strains of cryptocaryon irritans that are not susceptible to being eradicated with hyposalinity as indicated in the post above. I do not recommend hyposalinity for several reasons:

1. difficult to execute
2. difficult to measure SG properly
3. strains of cryptocaryon irritans that are not eradicated with hypo

I personally use Tank transfer exclusively but my fall back position would be copper tested twice daily.

Here is the link to the CP thread.

Also, give tank transfer a look. It works great for small fish where ammonia buildup is less of a concern. But it can be time consuming/work, and you will go thru a lot of salt.

I am not sure I agree with the conclusions of a lot of work and a lot of salt. You are not doing large tank transfers and prime or equivalent controls ammonia buildup with light feeding. The cost of salt compares favorably to the cost of medication.

Thanks all. I hope to have a fish in QT next week and begin the process and if anything comes up I'll be asking some more questions. Thanks again for all the valuable responses.
