So, I just stepped too near a stingray in the Gulf of Mexico. Now what?

We are vacationing in Clearwater Beach, FL. We went for one of our multiple daily jaunts in the Gulf of Mexico. As I was wading back toward shore and speaking with another tourist I thought I was bit by a sand crab.

I waded back and had my foot in a couple of inches of water and it was bleeding. I wish I had the video camera because it was actually kind of cool. As the water rolled in you could see the blood just around the small wound. When the water rolled back out the blood left the wound in a stream out toward deep water. It is on the inside of my foot over the top by about a half inch. I did a kind of ballet pose and put pressure on it with my other heel. It stopped bleeding.

I spoke with the desk guy, a native gulf coaster, and he said it looked like a stingray sting. He also said if it was a crab bite I would have 2 punctures. He said to put it in warm water although wikipedia says to use water as hot as you can stand because it will change the proteins in the venom and make it inert. I did use an ammonia based bodily fluid (thanks Tammy, I guess now we could be called kinky but I didn't enjoy it) as I recall from the Discovery channel.

The pain was evened out but I thought I saw a black something sticking out of the wound so I had Tammy try to squeeze it out and that may have been the wrong thing to do because now the pain is intensified. I would like to avoid the ER if I can.

Any ideas?

DEATH IS NEAR! jkjk, youll be fine but go to a Doc. No reason for things to get worse if they dont need to be.

Sorry to hear that. This does sound like a sting ray bite. However there are other possibilities. When did this happen? Regardless, it is always a good idea to get it checked out by a physician. Venoms are known to possibly cause arrythmias and other dangerous changes on vitals. This is unlikely but better to be safe IMO. You should also keep the wound clean to avoid any infections. Depending on your pain, you may need stronger prescription meds to control pain. I hope you feel better and enjoy the rest of your vacation.

It hurts really bad so we're going to the urgent care. Damn it. We had a Segway tour we've only rescheduled 3 times and now won't get to do it at all.

I would probably bet on a stingray also. Normally the wounds are on top of your foot???? Were you standing when it happened?

Also the ammonia based fluid is really a NO NO. If that fluid has any bacteria, then it would be transferred into the wound. The ammonia in urine is suppose to help but usually does more harm than good. So no more pee pee. :D

I'm not sure that it warranted a trip to the hospital unless you were having adverse reactions....vomiting, fever, red streaks, etc.

They will probably give you some antibiotics, so it doesn't get infected.

Carry on and slide your feet when you are in the Gulf!!!!!

We blew off the urgent care visit. The one we went to and the one we called both won't accept insurance. I would have to go to a regular hospital. The person I spoke to at the second clinic said pretty much what Andrea said. The ammonia based fluid is if you are in some remote island location with no access to medical care.

I was told to keep it in hot water for a couple of hours. The 30-90 minutes shown on Wikipedia is on the low side. He also said that if I'm up to date on my tetanus shot and I am not experiencing any symptoms other then the pain in the area of the sting that all they would do is give me benadryl (done) a tetanus booster (done), and antibiotics but that is just optional anyway.

So we went back to the resort and I sat in the hot tub which wasn't very hot. Now I'm back in the room and bummed because it is the nicest day since we have been in Clearwater and IF the shuttle actually proceeds with countdown tomorrow then we lose tomorrow too.

C'est La Vie. Friday morning we are heading to the Keys to spend 3 nights in Sugarloaf Key. Hopefully the last glitch is overcome AND the weather challenges are overcome for a launch tomorrow.

About 25 years ago I was snorkeling in Clearwater Fl and I saw stingrays everywhere, but didn't know that you are supposed to shuffle your feet to scare them away as you walk on the ocean floor. I took a step down and something punctured the bottom of my foot and I thought it was just a piece of broken shell until five minutes later when the intense pain set in. I spent the next few hours moaning and crying (yeah, not manly but I was 10 at the time), parents took me to a clinic and they said that it was definitely a stingray because of the single puncture wound and how large the hole was. The pain went away that afternoon and I was actually skateboarding that night. The effects of the venom should subside after less than a day, but infection is a real risk and it sounds like you may have a section of the barb broken off in your foot so you really need that looked at--good luck!

I just moved from Fl to Chicago this past weekend. After growing up surfing and fishing the east coast. My advice to you is to ignore the venom. It's the barb you have to worry about if it's still there. Keep it clean and wash it multiple times a day. Watch for infection as they can get nasty and it's no worth risking your foot.
