So what did you guys get at the swap?

I just wanted to drop a line and say that I am sorry for the poor selection of corals that my business dontated to the swap! Because of the move we have limited stocks of everything and I dontated corals that were growing well and were hardy.

Next year will be different! With 2x more space for propagation the donations will be OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!!

From what I was understanding there were quite a few people at the frag swap that were some what new to the hobby. And when you are new to the hobby there is no such thing as poor selection.

Just curious as to what store that would have been? and what corals?

Due to RC rules I cant say what store but if memory serves me right there was a couple Miami Orchid Stag (look out .... fast grower!), a candy cane, orange oxy, green microthalma, and I cant remember the rest.

Ok now for the bad news ..... the store is not ready yet, the dry goods area is open but the city wanted up to engineer our new tank racks to make sure that they are "safe". Believe me we can take everyone who is a member of BAR and place their cars on top of these stands and they will not move or buckle in anyway.

Once the final inspection is done, maybe sometime mid next week the tanks will get wet and we wil have fish. If you are wondering how the fish will make it though the move, what is left is still at the old location and we will just move the fish and the filters when we pass final.

But the bright side of the whole fiasco is that we get an additional 1000 gallons of salt tanks including a total of 6 of my reef tanks all filled with corals for sale. The frags tanks will be on-site but behind the scene with two of the six devoted to frags. The freshwater section has an additional 100 tanks bringing us up to over 225 tanks in the store with critters for sale. Can you say selection??

OK time to crash! Good night,

tyler

PS. There will be a grand oppening sometime, I will announce it through the BAR site. Look for specials and all the other percs of grand re-oppenings. I see my famous 4' round BBQ grill and Hot Dogs!!!

wow, i can't wait to visit that unmentionable obscure LFS! I've actually never even been to the old location. sounds exciting =X

Oh darn, I was going to go to the Village where the Pet lives to spend my Xmas gift certificate on a bangai. I take it that it's not even partially open?

So just curious, since we are somewhat on the subject...ok, well you guys put my mind back on the subject...

I was thinking of opening my own store in my town, probablly a small store front to start, but I am curious. Is there a place to go to discuss the subject? I mean is there a store owners club of some sort to discuss what has worked, and not worked for them? What makes the money and what doesn't?
Or is it all up to me to figure out? My town is growing fairly fast, and there are currently two main stores in town, then petco, petsmart, etc...

I really want to start my own aqua farm, but from what I understand I need a store front to do it, and will most likely have to rely on internet sales to make it work....

Sorry just had this on my mind a lot lately, and think I found a couple of small business grants, and stuff that might able to make this happen by the end of the year....but so many doubts in my head right now....

From time to time in the Coral Propagation & Aquaculture Forum this question comes up. If you do a search, you'll probably find some really interesting threads. I also remember it coming up in Anthony Calfo's old forum (I forget how RC decided to rename his old forum). As far as I know, all of Anthony's threads and responses still are still in the RC database.

In those threads, people mentioned a site you could go to that was focused more on the LFS side of the hobby. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name.

Worse comes to worse, you could send Anthony a message http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/member.php?action=getinfo&find=lastposter&threadid=975832

Best of luck,

Roy

the best advice that I can give anyone who is wanting to open a store is two fold. Education! Educate yourself as to what is best for your stock and most importantly educate your employees. They are your first line and the people who are helping your customers. If they dont know what they are talking about that reflects on you and your business. Secondly, do what is best for the animals/stock in your business. Dont skimp on equiptment and always have their interest in mind when making decisions.

Thanks you guys. I appreciate the links and stuff. I was considering starting my own store front based mainly on coral, fish, and dry good sales. But I don't have the start up money. So I am considering just makeing a aqua farm and raiseing tank bred corals and fish from my house. If I can make a profit from that then maybe I will expand to my own store front.
I love the idea of having my own store front but the start up cost for that compared to a home based aqua farm is tremendous.

So all in all a nice store front is my future goal, a sold home business supplying captive raised corals and fish is my immediate goal. Not only is it nice for preservation of our reefs, but also a good way to continue the hobby.

Hopefully I will be able to make some business contact in the near future from the links that you have given me, and be able to put together a solid business plan, and get thing rolling during this summer!
