So, What other secrets are you all hiding from me???

i connected a hose to my siphon thats long enough to reach my back yard when I drain. I use to use buckets. I don't drain in to my sink. Have you seen what the salty air does to cars near the ocean...corrodes them. And thats just the air, imagine what saltwater will do. I plan on living here for a while and I don't want to tear up all the floors of my house to remove leaky, corroded plumbing. I make sure I drain into a dirt patch because salt doesn't let anything grow wherever it's dumped. Just a thought.

i think it was mentioned before but at the bottom it says subscribe to thread...in n out without a trace:D

Ya think by now I would have known that. OOps even I (lol) make mistakes.

But hey I want to be noticed, invisibility is only fun at strip clubs.

:smokin:

Well, I ain't no plumber but I don't think there's too many places using metal pipes any longer ;) Just ribbin ya, it can still do a number on copper and the metal couplings and fittings...

Here is a weird one. When i order won ton soup from the chinesse food place for take out i keep the plastic container it comes in . They can be used for anything. I use them to hold my chemicals and test strips. They are also useful for keeping live brine shrimp in. I use a little air stone and they stay alive for days. Of course i dont pour them in the tank with the water

all the good ideas are already mentioned, so i'll give mine.:p

Those U tubes in the overflow recieve alot of light and algae forms. I use the black plastic wrap from an auto store. It's sold to bunch wires together. Wraps around the u tube very neatly.

I saw a couple people in here mention timers, but I wanted to add to it....

You know those annoying pop-up adds you get for little tiny spy cameras for (eh hum) surveilance? Well that company (x10) also sells a home automation package (called active home) that you use your computer to setup and will turn outlets on and off in your home based on timed schedules. It communicates across your electric wiring so there is no wiring for you to do except pluging it into your PC and plug devices into x10 boxes.

It operates separate from your PC (so you don't have to keep it on) and it's unaffected by power outages and is easy to control. My whole darn house is wired...Herp tank, freshwater tank, lights, A/C units, etc.. Heck..I even use them for christmas lights so I can hit one button on my remote and turn outlets on in a half dozen locations, or just have the computer turn it on and off.

..and you can buy extra components from Radio Shack in a pinch..they're compatible.

www.x10.com ....it's not just for perverts! :D

Check out your local restaurant for buckets with lids....they get food in them and toss them when empty....free buckets...they usually even run them through the dishwasher for you.

For those who dont already know: Use GFCI outlets for all reef related equipment...mine just tripped this morning and it was a good thing too, let me tell you....

all good ideas but i have to say that i could just see my wife when i tell her what i'm going to put in her blender

I noticed that your tank is 10 gallon. I have a 7 gal nano, and I find that liquid additve directions are always at least per 25 gal. So I went down to the pharmacy and if you go to the counter they'll give you free oral syrniges for giving medicine to kids. They fill to 1 tsp with measurements along the way. Perfect for the 1/3 of a tsp of Calxmax I put in my tank a few times a week.

This one is pretty lame and for larger tanks with hoods won't matter. Mine as well as a lot of the smaller (cheaper) kits I've seen at the lfs. Have an open top or pretty close to it. To clean outside glass, if you put white vinegar on a paper towel, rub outside surface, then wipe dry with paper towel, newspaper, whatever. It will come just as clean as any chemical cleaner can get it, It would really suck to mis-spray with one of those bottles. I've heard stories of things closing up in the tank when air-spray is used in the same room, not even near the tank.

I'm going to add this just because I read it in another post...I'm going to try it later, but I figured I'd post it a while.

I currently have foam under my pumps to help with vibration, but several people posted that they use old mouse pads to do the same job. I would have never thought of that.

I don't know if this is applicable to everyone but I thought I would post it for all of you who have prizm skimmers (not pro). After talking to Tom O'Toole at Inland Reef in NH about the Prizm how it doesn't skim as well as others and the design problems of the skimmer, I decided to try raise the level of the intake with respect to the water level. I elevated the skimmer by about 2 inches by putting styrofoam under the outflow. This does give the skimmer some instability so you will have to be careful the skimmer does not fall off your tank. This elevated the intake tube to be closer to the surface. I've noticed that the Prizm seems to skimmer better after the usual daily adjustments in flow. Just my experience.

I was just lucky but I chased the mantis out of its hole with a wooden skewer then chased it with a net. By blind luck the mantis swam into the aforementioned plastic coke bottle trap when I chased it and I lifted the trap out of the tank. That bugger swam fast.

csmart,
or you could leave the return hose in the tank,
then place the intake near a bucket, suck on the
end of the hose (no worries about swallowing water,
the cannister still needs to fill up),once water
is pouring into bucket, stop it with your finger
place in tank,attach strainer,...done.:)
this is how i prime my vortex filter after placing
the diatom powder in the jar.

One thing I dislike about those cannister filters is the ease of breaking the hose connections to cannister inlet and outlet, and to the valves. The tighten down collars really just push off the hose. Any ideas?

Is the vinegar method OK for acrylic tanks or just for glass?
