So, What other secrets are you all hiding from me???

I may get shot down for this but I use Saran Wrap on my 10gal quarantine tanks. I didnt want to spend $ on a glass top nor set up an auto top off. I got tired of filling jugs and using drip sets to replenish(I try to keep my fish seperate for 2 months). I do use airstones for fresh air and I do leave a small opening for air to escape. The saran sticks nicely to the outsides of the tank. I have the saran not extremely tight but droopy in the middle which allows condensation to drip back to the tank. I needed to cut down on evaporation which was causing fluctuations in my salinity that new arrivals didnt need. I also was happy to see that when new arrivals tried to jump they only hit a soft barrier vs. hard plastic eggcrate. I wouldnt recommend this if you have a light above the tank. I indirectly light my quarantine tanks.

India,
I also agree that the shrimp hatchery is one of the more original ideas I've heard. I'll have to try it someday soon.

Char,
Your idea for the weeds is also pretty neat. I'll definitely try it out this summer.

Newreeflady,
O.k. soooo...... do you want to explain this buttfish thing???

Obviously it was an older subject or thread here somewhere that I no doubtedly missed, and I haven't the foggiest what the heck you guys are talking about, but it sure as hell sounds funny!!!

alternative for suctioncups on powerheads

alternative for suctioncups on powerheads

Maxijets don't hang on the edge of my aquarium, it doesn't fit. I also wanted freedom to position it lower than the hang on strip would allow. I got tired of reattaching the suction cup base to the glass over and over. New suctioncups over and over, and cleaning behind them seldom happened.

I finally bought Magnavore 1 magnets (their smallest) and using the 2 part aqua putty, I attached the small piece that holds the Maxijet to the hanging strip directly on the back of the magnet. Slide the powerhead on and it stays put. Slide it off if you need to. Benefits include: Easy to repositioning of the powerhead just slide the outside magnet where you need it, no algae behind it ever, and because of the smaller magnet size(compared to suction cup base) you can get the powerhead in tight spots or up high easily.

Wow, this thread is awesome! I LOVE the magnavore/powerhead tip and am going to go set up a baby brine shrimp hatchery in a few minutes. Wonderful idea, India!

Mjmeier, I thought I was the only one who used MW online. :D I now know how to say "molybdenum." Have you listened to how Merriam Webster's online pronunciation guide says "zooxanthellae?." Way cool. :D I was saying "zooks-an-thell-a" but it's "zo-uh-zan-thella." Heh heh.

If you have an outside RO filter, put a garden hose timer from Walmart to turn your water on a couple times a day. I just replaced my membranes & I found green algea on my ro membrane from sitting idle. The timer will turn your water on a couple of times a day to keep algea from growing & keep your RO bucket full.

similar to India's idea, take a 35mm film canister with the lid on.Drill about 4-5 small holes all around.Fill with rubble and drop in a few shrimp pellets.Place it behind your rockwork, pods and bristleworms will be attracted to it.They will take up residence there and it easy to remove to seed new tanks with.

For those with acrylic tanks:

place some very fine sandpaper on a flat even surface and smooth out your kent proscraper a little before every use. I will greatly diminish the fine scratches made by it when used more then once.

You blade will last longer of course...that s the bonus.

The idea came from Mark at www.thereefshop.com

My husband works for a company called PacTec, Inc. They make something called a pop-up spill berm. The thing lays flat until water starts to hit it...then the sides pop-up to contain it. Check it out.... it can be custom-made to any size and from what I understand they are fairly cheap. I'm sure everyone here can imagine the variety of uses for this thing....

*Wow* I can think of millions of uses for that.... Koi pond, kiddie pool, MOST OF ALL LEAK CATCHER AROUND MY SUMP!!!!!

got these both from here... hermit crab shells from the local crafts store. About a dollar a bag. Thinking about trying the metallic ones next for kicks...

2 qt. plastic paint containers from HD, they have measurements right on the side, great for dipping. less than a dollar.

Like the 35mm brine shrimp idea, have several of those around. Also like the webster online. Now I won't look like an idiot mispronouncing refugeum and polyp (well, I should say less of an idiot...)

Another one...Don't you hate it when your light timers and fan power supplies take up too much space on your powerstrip (or outlets), covering another outlet or two???

This gadget fixes the problem:

It is called the "LIBERATOR" and they sell for $1.79 each at CYBERGUYS.COM (http://www.cyberguys.com).

Rather than IV bag for kalk drip, I use a 1g "reptile drip feeder" from the local pet store (just a few bucks). It's got a pin hole in the top to avoid vacuum and a nice valve that's perfect for setting the proper drip rate. In addition, the output is about an inch from the bottom, so you can mix your kalk and then let the precipitate settle to the bottom for an hour or so before opening the valve. Then you only drip the clear stuff which is what you want.
