I know nothing about bumps and have never tried to keep one. Sorry!

It is a dry heat what can I say??

Anyway, I would like to thank you for all of the information that you have provided. I was getting kinda frustrated with this new hobby and all of the complex issues I thought this hobby had. I took two weeks to read through your entire thread, but it was well worth it. I don't know why you help all of us newbies out but I am surely grateful. I have now decided to finally push on and take the first step and jump in. I am going to convert my 90 gallon cichlid tank to a saltwater reef tank.
I would like to personally thank you for the information and the kicks in the butt many of us have received for the somewhat stupid and sometimes outrageous questions we have all asked.

I hope you continue with help. I don't know if I would be doing this new tank if it wasn't for your valuable information. Thank you sooooooooo much1111 :)

Well, thank you soooooooo much for your kind comments, As a Newbie I do want to forewarn you about "Jumping in". Even though Cichlids may tolerate such actions many saltwater fish are very skittish, and some, even toxic. Jumping in is not going to make you first encounter in this hobby all that rewarding. :D

:hmm3: I have searched the threads and opinions seem to be all over the place. I recently (4/5 days ago) upgraded my 110 gallon tank to 2/250watt 15,000 MH lights. While gazing at the tank today I noticed that I have bleached about 30% of my coraline white. Reading the threads tells me I have killed this coraline but in time newcoraline will grow. Now, to the actual question....should I continue running the MH 12 hours/day and see what happens or do I cut back and increase the lighting slowly over the next couple of months? Does coraline react to light change like soft coral would? Calcium is around 400 but I need to check my alk still.

Very easy to keep fish. No death and and the fish have grown. Going to a larger aquarium. Thought you would enjoy these photos.

It looks like my drink that I had watching the Super Bowl yesterday. I also had drawn butter with my lobster.
:D

Tom,

It's been frustrating lately! It's just been a bad series of events. First, my wife wants a new stand and canopy just like the new as seen at other people's homes who attend the aquarium society. That's about $400. So I have to wait while it's built by a friend.

Can't wait to empty the tank after I've invested over 8 weeks of time in. Now I have all this work in front of me just for pretty and to keep the other mouth shut, if you know what I mean.

My fish took a jump while cleaning my tank. This was after I spilled water all over the place because I got mixed up with the hose and left the pump on while doing a water change.

I dropped a large chunk of LR on my new oak floors. Nice!

My skimmer has a leak of some sort. I'm too frustrated to deal with it right now, so I have someone coming over to help.

My pump may be too light with flow. I need to upgrade probably to a mag 18.

So many dammed cords all over the place that I can't figure out where each goes and where to plug in my MH's. I don't wat to start a fire.

As for the fish on the floor, my attitude was to let the dammed fish grow some freakin' legs for all I care. Stupid fish! After my daughter begged me to save it, I picked it up and performed a Hail Mary into the tank. The irony of this is that we name fish in this house. The green and orange fish is called Marino. How interesting!

What's wrong with me at times? Special thanks to some friends who have been keeping me calm. I've been patient, but it seems overwhelming. It's been a tough month so far.

It just seems easier to go scuba on the weekends! To get away from it all, I left last week from sunny West Palm to Pittsburgh to party since last Tuesday and then I was off to Detroit. Now I'm back home and I stick up my middle finger at my 125g. That's not good!

Carlos,

Well at least you can build the stand and canopy out of oak when you rip out that flooring. :D

We have a saying in this hobby, "Detritus Happens!!!" ;)

I am glad I am not in your position with the floor. Yes, Tom is right about the oak, you can have a nice one after you rip it out.

Tom, I would not suggest drinking water from my fish bucket. But if you insist, I could toss in a few olives to make it worth while.

How to convert a freshwater to a saltwater tank?

How to convert a freshwater to a saltwater tank?

Hi everyone, I'm new to saltwater tanks and have been doing a lot of reading. This is a great thread and I learned a lot from it yet.
I have a typical beginner's question that none of the books or sites I've read so far explain:

So I saw this great deal for an empty 125 gal tank, but it's not reef ready nor does it have anything other thank the tank itself, stand and hood. I was thinking of starting off with a FOWLR setup and in a few months move on to reef. My questions are:
1. Am I going to spend a fortune buying equipment (sump, pumps, skimmer, lights, etc) and should consider buying a complete setup with no livestock instead?
2. Is it ok to use a hang-on overflow with this tank size?
3. If I keep this tank, where can I learn how to do all the plumbing (what connects to what)? All I have read so far is pretty high level. Or should I ask "will I be able to do it myself?"

Thanks!

Hi Recife

Many, many people do what you're about to do so don't sweat it.

The only caution I have about switching a FW to SW tank is often the FW tank has been medicated periodically. No problem, just rinse and clean it well. If you have used copper based medications then using a little muriatic acid in the rinse water will be in order.

I think the biggest sticker shock will be for lighting. A SW tank uses much brighter lighting than that FW, especially when you add coral. The The Lighting Thread will guide you through that process.

You have a big tank and some would say it requires no filtration if properly stocked with LR and LS. The problem is that a SW tank needs circulation of the water. Filter can do this but a sump is even better. Sumps add the ability to circulate the water as well as additional volume. A second choice is to use a "closed loop" recirculation system.

The answer to your third question is difficult. I was fired during the building of the "Great Wall of China" so my DIY ability is always in question. Try Marc's Mel's Reef for more instructive ideas. :D

Thanks Tom!

I was expecting that type of reply: "are you crazy?? you can't use an external overflow in a tank like that!"

I don't mind spending some $$$ in stuff. It's part of the adventure I think and I want to enjoy it. :)

Those 2 links are excellent. That's exactly the kind of explanation I was looking for. Next stop, my LFS!

Tom,

I've read somewhere that you know so much about this marine hobby and it's due to the fact that you've had a physical relationship in the past with a real mermaid. Is this true, and where can I find one?
